Today I am afloat. It’s not as pleasant as it sounds. Sometimes, in this headspace, and just in general, it’s helpful to make lists of things that exist and are wonderful. It’s an exercise in gratitude, but also in concretizing the world when it’s feeling particularly gaseous.
Just to be clear, these are things (objects, abstract concepts, etc.):
1. My brother’s cat’s fluff. She is the fluff of legend.
2. Nutella. It’s good stuff.
3. Getting on an airplane in Paris at 8AM and getting off in London at 8AM. Never forget: you are a time traveler.
4. The notification of a new email from a human being that I adore.
5. My purple plant throwing reddish shadows in the morning light.
6. Putting on tinted moisturizer.
7. A podcast that’s been around for a while, but I’ve only just found it, so I have tons of episodes to listen to.
8. The fact that a single skincare product can trigger a happy memory of two very different cities
9. My fact that next time I move, whenever and wherever that may be, all of my stuff will fit in a single duffel bag.
10. The rug on my floor. It’s perfect.
11. Waking up and realizing you don’t have to be awake yet, and experiencing falling asleep as a pleasant, involuntary sensation instead of a source of dread like it was just hours ago.
12. Scented candles.
13. Iced coffee.
14. Doing something just for the hell of it.
15. For the first time in what feels like a decade, not having a fresh/healing piercing that requires constant maintenance and attention, and prohibits certain kinds of sleep and/or headphones.
