Welcome to your new digital Equity Magazine. How fabulous to have an online hub for all things Equity!
Please remember to share the Equity Mag articles you love on Socials so that our colleagues and arts-loving friends can keep up-to-date on all the terrific events, workshops, campaigns and celebrations that make us Equity.
I feel particularly proud and excited as I read the article introducing us to the many fresh faces recently elected to National Performers’ Committee (NPC). We had a record number of performers nominate themselves for the 33 positions available. I’m particularly proud that this NPC has the greatest diversity of gender, age, experience, and ethnicity in Equity’s history.
A huge congratulations to those of you elected for the next two years and a huge, huge thank-you to those outgoing NPC members for the countless hours you dedicated to making this union be as brilliant as it can possibly be.
I’ll have the chance to meet our new NPC members when I host our first face-to-face meeting together in Sydney in September. I cannot wait. As always, we have so much on the agenda to discuss, debate and decide on. I know we are set for a truly inspiring few days. I also know our plan will be dependent, as always, on every Australian performer being part of their union and being prepared to stand together and take action to win.
For the first time in seven years we are at the table to renegotiate the major Australian film and TV agreements (ATPA and AFFCA). This is a terrific opportunity to address the big challenges facing Australian actors. For example, almost 60 per cent of us earn less than $20,000 per year from our craft. Forty per cent earn less than $10,000.
At the last meeting producers flagged cost cutting measures that would make it even harder to sustain a living as an actor.
There’s never been a more important time to be an Equity member and show producers that actors are serious about changing their industry for the better.
The outcome of these negotiations will impact on Australian actors for years to come.
We need to win agreements that continue to preserve industry standards and deliver improvements around pay, residuals, superannuation, cultural leave, diversity and intimacy guidelines. And we can’t do that without you.
Chloe Dallimore is the president of Equity Australia. She has been a proud Equity member since 1996.
