What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great way of repairing your gear until you are at the trailhead to have it professionally repaired. The trick is knowing what to do with it when you require it.

Having the right tools at hand is essential when you are out in the field. This kit was designed with this in mind and includes all of the basic hand tools needed to repair equipment in the field. The tools are all made of metal and feature only a small amount of plastic to be used in a variety of ways. The kit comes with the pouch made of canvas that is zippered to hold the coalcracker tools, as well as a twist awl, reamer, cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also comes with a bottle of coalcracker oil, a guidebook as well as a wooden spool, the reamer and twisted awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gear, consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These tough patches have high-performance adhesives that are applied to a tough polyurethane back that allows a tear to heal under pressure. Available in clear or colored options they offer a long-lasting protection against punctures, moisture saltwater, sunlight and temperatures that are extreme.

If your kit isn't stocked with any of the above items, you might want to consider adding a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This glue that is water-tight will adhere to plastics, fabrics, metals and more to provide an unbreakable fix. It's ideal for fixing drysuits and can be applied while in the field. Allow the sealant to set for up to 12 hours before using the repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for backpacks, tents and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. It includes one Clean Tape patch and a repair swatch of sil-nylon and a 1/4 ounce tube of Goretex Sil-Fix repair adhesive & sealant and brush. Apply patch to a clean smooth, flat surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Remove the release paper from the patch surface and rub it with moderate pressure (adhesive side facing down).


Surface preparation is vital for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or oils on boots and shoes can cause adhesion issues. To get the best results, make use of Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed the curing process up to two hours.
