There’s no two ways around this — I hated season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s Jack Ryan. I started watching this season way back in March, and recently forced myself to finish it. My recollection is that I mostly enjoyed season one, so this was disappointing. It’s also disappointing because I love the first three Jack Ryan films and read a lot of the books when I was a teenager in the 90’s.
Frankly, this show feels like it was written by people in the CIA who are actually proud of their decades long history of meddling in the internal affairs of other nations, seemingly blind to the trail of devastation that their work has wrought around the globe. Season one at least dealt with the real moral injury suffered by the pilots of drone bombers in the U.S. military. Season two has no similar level of introspection.
This Jack Ryan is consumed with the ends and will justify any means necessary to accomplish them. This show features Ryan and his companions traipsing around the world kidnapping, maiming, and murdering to get what they want. It shows the CIA interfering with a foreign election. It shows an illegal assault on the presidential estate of a foreign country. And these actions aren’t vilified, they are glorified. In the very last episode we see Ryan assault and nearly murder in cold blood the president of a foreign country. We later see that, due to the direct actions of Ryan and his compatriots, the presidential estate is allowed to be breached and overrun by protestors who, it is implied, murder the president.
Make no mistake, the fictional president of Venezuela in this series is presented as a corrupt, evil man. And men like that are positions of power all over the world, including the real life leader of Venezuela. But it’s not the place of the U.S. government to impose its will on such leaders and countries, either morally or Constitutionally. Yet it has happened too many times over the last century, and this season of Jack Ryan revels in such illegal activities. We recently saw the real life U.S. government attempt to support a coup in Venezuela, and one wonders if this show were meant as propaganda in support of such activies.
Ryan, Greer, and their companions are treated as unorthodox heroes. The kind of guys who won’t let the rules stop them from getting the job done. The show should have ended with their imprisonment for life, but it doesn’t. And sadly that too is true to life.
