6.2: Types of Graphs
Types of Graphs
Histogram
A graph used to display the frequencies of continuous data (therefore no gaps between the bars) grouped in equal sized intervals
Broken-line graph
A graph formed by line segments that join representing how data changes over time
Pictograph
A graph that uses pictures or symbols to represent one or more data values
Broken-line graph
A graph formed by line segments that join representing how data changes over time
Line Plot
A graph that shows a mark (usually “X”) above the value on a number line for each entry in the data set
Bar Graph
A graph that has horizontal or vertical bars of equal width to show the frequency and gaps to show the discrete nature of data
Stacked Bar Graph
A graph that combines 2 or more bar graphs to proportionately compare 2 or more aspects of the data in related contexts
Multiple-Bar Graph
A graph that combines 2 or more graphs to compare 2 or more of data in related contexts
Scales
indentifies the possible values of a variable along an axis of a graph.
Title
Introduces the data in the graph
Labels
provides additional information (e.g Intervals)
Plotting Coordinate Points
Coordinate grid - a grid with each horizontal and vertical line numbered in order
Coordinate pair - a pair of numbers that describe a point on a coordinate grid.
The first number tells you the horizontal distance from the origin (right if positive, left if negative). The second number describes the vertical distance from the origin (up if positive, down if negative).
Line Graphs
line graph - a graph that has a line through the plotted points. It shows how the change in one value is RELATED to the change in another value.
Histograms
Histogram - a graph where data is grouped into intervals; the height of each bar shows how many are in each interval. You can choose the interval.
Interval - the distance between two endpoints on a graph scale. They should be equal.
Histogram
Shows frequency of discrete or continuous data grouped in equal sized INTERVALS
NO GAPS between the data to show continuous nature of the data
Bar Graph
Represents frequency of an event or outcome
Gaps between the bars to show data is discrete
