I went through a handbag phase not too long ago. Every day, I would go online and admire the different colors and shapes of purses in hopes of finding one to represent me. Some bags made me feel like I finally belonged to the cool in crowd. Others signaled that I, who in my childhood and early adolescence was considered a dork, had become an elegant, refined woman. I also had bags that told the world that I was impractical, and thus free-spirited and fun. Bags seemed kind. They never made me feel bad about gaining a few pounds. They didn’t hurt me like shoes. I didn’t even have to step in front of a mirror to appreciate the artistry. They became perfect micro-symbols of who I wanted the world to know me as. Fashion has that in common with traditional art. Done with the right intention, it can enhance the surface to match your inner life.
Then the year drew to a close and it was time to find simplicity after an overly complicated epoch. The constant changing of vessels to hold my essentials had become too tiresome. I am happy to concentrate my efforts of self-expression elsewhere.
So here it is. I have found the one to settle with for a few seasons. It’s anonymous. I can’t find a brand name anywhere. All it says indented across the interior like a proud battle scar is “natural leather, handmade in Italy.” It is sturdy, it keeps all of my belongings safe. That’s important when belongings include diaries that hold my innermost observations and prayers. It is spacious. My kindle and notebooks fit comfortably. I am happy that it supports my creative endeavors. It is light on the shoulders. It wants me to be an active citizen on the ground. It is straightforward and doesn’t distract me. When I gaze upon its deeply rich color, it brings me joy. It even reminds me of my mother’s bag when I was a little girl. I’m a sucker for nostalgia.
But here is one surprising epiphany. Only in hindsight do I realize that it is made of a poor animal’s skin. I am reminded of my flaw. In trying to be mindful, I still found a way to be thoughtless.
