Camera Movement And Emotions
replica chopard

When we think of isolation, loneliness, and emotional turmoil, our imagination often conjures up images of lonely-looking figures sitting (or standing) alone in a space that seems altogether too large in comparison.
Now, whilst making films, directors can choose to convey those emotions using multiple different methods. Two of the tools they have at their disposal take the form of close-up shots, where the actors’ performance is on display, and pull-out shots, wherein the camera pulls away from the subject, de-emphasizing them.
A recent example that showcased the effective use of both shots in combination was a scene in the 2013 period drama Belle, directed by Amma Asante, the story of an illegitimate, mixed-race daughter of a British navy admiral. It gives us a glimpse into what life was like for people of colour in Britain before the abolishment of slavery. Our protagonist Belle presents an interesting picture, as she is a member of the aristocracy and a woman of colour. The colour of her skin, and the lineage it implied, are the subject of scorn and ridicule. As in the case of Green Book, we are presented with a picture of an individual who can never fully belong to either community of which they are a part- white or black.
In the scene I am referencing, we watch Belle break down in front of her mirror, crying as she claws at her own skin as if to rid herself of what she perceives to be responsible for her isolation. Amma Asante allows viewers to fully experience Belle’s emotional devastation through a close-up shot which puts Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s performance front and center. All before slowly pulling the camera back, leaving us watching as Belle’s figure appears smaller and the room more cavernous. The combination of the two sells the protagonist’s isolation and strengthens our emotional connection to her as well.
Watching this scene helps me appreciate the thought and planning that goes into building every sequence and the role each element plays in cultivating those emotions we take for granted while watching.
