Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. As a child, he enjoyed studying his books and exploring the woods, which developed his love for learning and understanding how the world works, which was important later in in his presidency. He received a comprehensive education, studying Latin and Greek at a local private school before enrolling at the College of William & Mary. Before his presidency, Jefferson was a lawyer, a member of Virginia's legislature, and served as the U.S. Secretary of State. He made significant contributions, including drafting the Declaration of Independence and establishing religious freedom in Virginia. Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton and they had six children. He was 57 years old when he was elected as the third President of the United States.

Thomas Jefferson, a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, made several promises to voters during his tenure. These included advocating for public education, free voting, a free press, limited government, and an agrarian democracy. The Democratic-Republican Party, which he was a part of, was known for its liberalism, republicanism, and advocacy for individual liberty, equal rights, and free markets. The party's slogan was "Jefferson and Liberty." His main political opponents were Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, John Adams, Aaron Burr, and Patrick Henry.

One of Thomas Jefferson’s significant executive arguments was his refusal to pay increased demands to the Pasha of Tripoli, leading to a war with the Barbary pirates. A notable executive order was the Louisiana Purchase, where Jefferson negotiated the purchase of the port of New Orleans and West Florida from France, which unexpectedly led to the acquisition of a vast territory, doubling the size of the nation.
