It also has the feature of smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help identify the areas in your home that need attention and create a cleaning route around them. This technology is extremely effective in navigating around toys that have been left on the floor, or furniture legs sticking out underneath things. It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to reality when it starts drifting from its intended location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers underneath the bottom of the Roomba that do not have bristles, and thus tend to be more resistant to tangles than the previous models. They are also taller and can fit under low couches or beds. They're designed to make the model more adaptable to different floor types.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models with a high-end price tag by its brand new dirt detection feature, which makes use of a camera in order to detect dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around a room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use right away. After taking off the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, it is simply connected to the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicator lights on top that show when the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
