How to Choose More Help
If you like the idea of a quick, clean coffee fix first thing in the morning, a pod machine is a good option. How do you pick the best one?
In a nod towards retro design, this machine sports the SMEG and Lavazza branding across its front. It needs a large space on your countertop and is pricier than others. But, it's a top-performing pod coffee maker with the solid feel.
1. Nespresso Compatible
If you're a Nespresso lover, you'll need to pick the right coffee pod maker that is compatible with the brand's capsules. It's also possible to look for one that is able to use other types of capsules as well, like organic and Fairtrade choices or special flavoured pods. They're usually sold at a similar price to the originals and some include a built-in milk frother so you can make an espresso or cappuccino.
Bruvi's entry into the pod machine market in 2022 was greeted with awe. The brightly-colored device promised a variety of drink choices, a better cup of coffee than any other pod machine, and pods you could throw away without worrying about the environmental impact.
It is a success on all three counts. The pod coffee maker is small and inexpensive yet it makes an intense and rich cup of espresso every time. It's also one of the quietest models on the market which means you can make your cup of Joe before your alarm clock is set to sound.
The Bruvi comes in two sizes and can be adjusted to the type of beverage you are making. If you're brewing a latte or cappuccino it comes with three different textures and temperature settings for milk so you can enjoy your froth. It can also make hot cocoa, which is great for both kids and adults who want to unwind.
Another major plus is the programmable sleep mode that switches to standby after an hour of no use. It's also easy to clean, and uses only a tiny amount of water. If you want to keep your energy bills low, you should consider purchasing an appliance that has an open capsule holder that is removable to make emptying easier.
You can also add a milk maker to your coffee pod (unless one is already included in the model you purchase). Other things you might want to consider are an reusable filter that can be used with reusable capsules and a water kettle, or thermometer for precise temperature control and a travel mug.
2. Easy to Clean
The convenience of a coffee pod machine makes it easy to start your day with a quick, hot cup of coffee. In just a few minutes you'll be enjoying an iced drink that has been freshly brewed. Just put a pod in and switch it on. They are also easy to clean, and the majority of them don't require regular maintenance -- simply refilling the water tank and descaling every six months or as often.
Keurig's K-Cups come with the broadest selection of choices on the market including national brands as well as popular grocery store brands such as Folgers, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Dunkin' Donuts. There are also some alternatives to coffee, such as tea and hot cocoa, available in K-Cups from a variety of brands. You don't need to make use of Keurig K-Cups for a great cup. You can also make it with disposable filter capsules that are made of plastic or paper and can hold ground coffee, drippods that are pre-loaded, or loose grounds of coffee.
But many of these machines aren't known for delivering an intense, rich and robust brew that is able to satisfy the taste of discerning consumers. During our tests, we discovered that some pod coffee makers made watery or bitter cups of coffee. Some were so difficult to operate that they occupied a lot of space on your counter and were prone to be noisy.
There are several high-quality pod coffee makers that offer the ease of operation and consistency of a single-serve machine without the disappointing taste and wasteful packaging. Some models have an integrated frother that can froth and pour your cappuccino or latte, while others have a separate frother that you can connect to the machine to create a deliciously frothy top to your beverage.
In addition to producing a great brew and brewing great coffee, these modern pod coffee machines have also taken steps to address the increasing concerns about environmental impact that comes with single-serve pods made of plastic. Keurig and Nespresso made their aluminum pods recyclable by replacing them polypropylene. The latter provides free capsule recycling bags that are dropped off at any boutique or UPS facility. Bruvi is a new competitor, makes use of pods that are compatible with its own brewers and are designed to be able to break down quickly in landfills and not leave microplastics.
3. Fast Brewing
A pod coffee machine is a godsend for those who don't wish to grind beans or boil kettles. These devices are foolproof and allow you to brew a cup of espresso, coffee or tea in mere minutes with no clean up. Although these machines generate more waste for the environment than their drip counterparts but they're a lot less fussy than brewing whole beans in a French press or pour-over.
In the late 2022's, an LA-based startup known as Bruvi launched its BV-01 coffee pod machine. It promised to produce superior single serve coffee that tastes better, offer more drinks options than the many other pod-based machines, and also provide reusable capsules which could be thrown out without breaking down into tiny microplastics. While the Brewer Bruvi is more expensive than Keurig and Nespresso models however, it's a fantastic all-round device that feels like the dawn of a new era for pod coffee.
When buying a coffee pod maker, the size of the serving is a major factor to take into account. Certain models can make single-serve cups in a variety of sizes, ranging from huge travel mugs to 2-ounce espresso shots. Certain machines can brew entire pots of coffee. Some even have milk frothers to make an incredibly creamy cappuccino or latte.
Another aspect to be considered is the design of a pod coffee machine. The color and finish of the machine and the size and location of the reservoir for water and pod compartment will impact the way your machine appears on your kitchen counter. Certain brands have different colored pods, so you can change your drink to suit the season or mood.
Pod coffee makers are typically compact and occupy less space than drip or single-serve brewers. While a compact footprint is great however, it's essential to ensure that your machine has enough capacity to make several cups between refills. For the average household, a water tank that holds at least 40 ounces should suffice for most pod coffee makers.
4. Variety of drinks
Pod machines are surprisingly flexible and, based on the brand you choose they can make a variety of drinks. Certain brands, like the popular Keurig systems and Sage's Nespresso collab, can make up to four different sizes of drink while others only offer one or two options. Some machines can also make hot chocolate, and cold drinks.
Some pod coffee machines come with built-in milk frothers that can make cappuccinos, lattes and other drinks that are frothy. Some require an additional milk jug or a conjoined one to perform this function. The top milk-frothing coffee machines are simple to operate and provide precise control. They also feature sleek designs that can be incorporated into any kitchen.
The Grind One is a great example. Its minimalist design is a far cry from the curves that are seen on other pod coffee makers. It's smaller than the majority of Keurigs, making it ideal for small kitchens and dorms. The water tank is easy to access and holds up to 40 pounds. Used capsules are automatically stored in an attached container and, other than maintaining the reservoir's capacity and decaling every six months or this means that the machine needs little maintenance.
The machine is more expensive than the other models we've reviewed but offers a premium experience. The drip tray can be adjusted so that it fits either tall travel mugs or short espresso cups. It can make up to five different drinks due to the barcode system that scans each compatible pod to automatically adjust its settings.
This is the most attractive coffee pod machine we've seen and has a great tasting beverage, particularly for an automatic. We didn't award this machine the top spot since it's not able to milk froth. The only choice is to use dried skimmed milk capsules, which don't taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. If it had a built-in milk frother then we'd consider this pod machine to be the top spot.
