Glazing Repair - How to Repair a Cracked Window
Glazing can have a significant impact on the energy efficiency of your home. This is particularly true for older double-glazed windows.
It is possible to replace the glazing points by putting the window still in place, but it is easier and quicker to remove the glass and frame. This is also a good occasion to replace the rubber gaskets.
Broken Glass
Cracked glass isn't just unsightly but can also let valuable sunlight and heat escape from your home. It's usually possible to repair a damaged window pane without the need for a complete replacement.
Begin by putting on your protective gloves and safety goggles. You should also place an X-shaped piece of tape an "X" shape on the glass that you plan to remove (duct or painter's tap works well). This will stop any broken glass from falling on your work surface as you work.
If you've got a tiny crack in your window glass, cover it with tape to keep out water, wind and insects. One strip of tape should be sufficient for cracks with a superficial appearance, but if you're worried about the weather getting worse before you can replace your window, consider using a heavier-duty plastic cover, like a tarp, or a garbage bag, to keep the glass in place until you can obtain a permanent fix.
For cracks that aren't quite as shallow try using a tough adhesive designed specifically for windows, such as Loctite Super Glue Glass. This high-tech glue is designed to adhere to glass and dry clear for a flawless finish. Apply it to the cracks in the glass and allow it to dry completely before applying another layer.
Glass windows can also develop stress cracks. They're usually caused by significant changes in temperature, and can quickly spread across the entire glass window if not repaired. To stop stress cracks from occurring, score an arc using a glass cutter near the crack. This will stop the crack from spreading, and can reduce the size by a day or so.
If you're replacing a damaged window take measurements of the frame to determine the size of the new pane. It should be slightly smaller than the opening to allow for expansion and contraction, and to make up for any imperfections in the frame or glass. After cutting your glass, apply glaziers compound around the edges of the frame and glass. After the compound has dried paint it in a manner that matches the frame.
Condensation on the inside of Double Glazed Windows
Condensation inside double-glazed windows is typically an indication that the seal around the window unit has failed. This is a serious issue because it indicates that heat from your home is lost through the window, and could be costly for you and your energy bills.
New double glazing is designed to stop heat transfer between two glass panes by sandwiching a layer air or a vacuum between them. This creates a tight seal that prevents warm air from escaping. If the glass is colder or colder than the frame, condensation will accumulate on it, which can damage the window. If you're unable to remove condensation from double-glazed windows by opening windows, using extractors, using dehumidifiers or trickle venting, you might require the assistance of an expert.
It's less likely for condensation to appear on the exterior of double-glazed windows, but it could happen when the seal between the glass and window frame has started to deteriorate. This is more common in winter when the temperature is lower, making it more easy for condensation to form. This is caused by a defect in the spacer used between the frame and the window. The spacer is filled with desiccant which is very absorbent and will absorb any excess moisture.
This could result in moisture leaking into the gap once the desiccant has been saturated. This can cause condensation and water to build in the gap which is difficult to clean out.
Most reputable window companies provide a guarantee and will replace the unit and glass of the window if it's damaged by condensation. It's essential to notify your window installer immediately you spot them so that the condensation can be repaired promptly to prevent further damage to the window unit as well as the frame surrounding it.
Shattering Window Glass
A window that is cracked isn't just a cosmetic problem, it could be a security risk, especially if the crack has been spreading. It is recommended to get it repaired as soon as possible. Glass adhesives can be used for vehicle windows that can be purchased on the internet or at many auto repair shops. You can also use a glazing compound for use at home that is available at a variety of hardware and home improvement stores.
Before beginning any task, put on thick cut-proof gloves and safety glasses and sweep the area to remove large pieces of shards. Also, you should vacuum up any chips that fell. This will prevent them from causing injury to yourself or a glass repair technician in the future.
It's a good idea climb a ladder instead of standing on the floor. This will let you reach all the parts of the frame more easily and also protect your glass from falling. Before you start, it's a good idea clean the rabbet. This is the area around where glass is placed. Clean it and then apply the linseed oil to the rabbet, which will allow the new putty to stick securely.
After the frame is cleaned and the rabbet prepared It's now time to prepare the replacement pane. Measure the height and width of the opening both ways and then purchase an item of double-strength glass that is 1/8 inch smaller in both directions. You'll also need to purchase glass points, which are steel triangles which hold the glass in the right place.
With the window sash removed and the pry-bar flat, use it to gently pull the sash away from the moulding of wood. You may have to scrape old glazing off using a utility blade or chisel. Then you can use the heat gun to warm up any putty that won't easily come off. This will make it much easier to remove it.
When the frame is out from the molding then carefully press the glass in the frame. Fill in the gaps with either a glazier's tipped or a knife. Once the putty is dry, paint the frame in a similar color to the putty. Paint the glass and the compound by overlapping the paint slightly.
Replacement Window Glass
Wear a pair of gloves and eye protection when replacing a damaged piece of glass. Tape the window's edges to prevent it from breaking when you take it off.
Start by removing the old glazing compound and glazing points (small metal triangles) from the frame using a knife. Clean double glazing repair and apply a layer of linseed oil in order to help the new putty stick to it better.
When the frame is complete and you are ready to take measurements for a new window pane and buy it from a home improvement store or another retailer. Be sure to purchase the pane 1/6th inch shorter in every direction than the measurement to ensure a snug fit.
Installing the new window is easier than you think, however be sure to follow the directions of the manufacturer to ensure a right fit and long life span for your new pane. Use a wire brush to clean the frame opening of any old paint or wood gunk. then sand it to bare wood, which will enhance the seal between the frame and sash.
Make use of the edge of the putty knife while inserting the new pane to lay it gently against the wood frame. The glazier's tips should be pressed into the frame every six inches. This will hold the new pane securely in place.
After the frame has cure, paint the new joint with several coats of paint to match the rest of the frame. Let the paint completely dry before proceeding to cleaning and maintaining your window. Maintaining your windows in good shape and ensuring that they function correctly will extend their life expectancy and improve the energy efficiency of your home. If your windows are outdated or are in poor condition then you might be better off having the complete replacement of your windows. If you decide to go down this route, we recommend choosing the highest-quality, well-insulated window that can reduce your energy bills. The type of window that you choose will also affect the overall cost of your project.
