In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a good job of removing pet hair, but it had a difficult time with extremely thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and isn't even far from being as costly as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It's got plenty of features that we'd like to see in a top-of-the-line model however it lacks all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you might find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start running right away. After you have removed the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its big "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery is out or it's stuffed with debris, and it has indicators on the top of the device to indicate that its bin is full or it requires recharging, or its Wi-Fi signal is not working.
