How To Recognize The Private ADHD Titration That Is Right For You
Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due both to manufacturing problems and an increase in demand worldwide.

Our service can offer private ADHD testing as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments cost include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A thorough evaluation of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist. This will include a medical history and an assessment using the standard ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

After your evaluation, you will be informed whether medication may be beneficial in your case. The discussion will take place at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, by video link, or over the phone). Your clinician will explain the various options for medication and if you decide to start on medication we will suggest titrating dosage to ensure the balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process may take a few weeks and involves gradually adjusting your child's dosage until the proper balance is reached. It's not uncommon to need to adjust three or four medications before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is essential for parents to participate in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behaviour so that they can let the doctor know whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment the medication you take will be issued with an individual prescription that you'll have to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure measurements. Annual checks are also required.

Follow-up ADHD titration

After the evaluation is completed and you are satisfied, you can schedule follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist. Usually the appointment will take place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it may be possible to have an audio only consultation (again at an additional cost).

At this point we will discuss any treatment options we have and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration program. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage and a discussion around any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost of these titration sessions is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any cost of medication.

The psychiatrist will ask you questions regarding your family history as well as the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any mental health issues that you may be experiencing. This is because ADHD can be a genetic condition and it is important to examine any family history that may indicate that you're at risk of developing the disorder.

During this examination, it is essential to be truthful and open with the doctor who will be using the information you provide to determine whether you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step in the process, because if you don't do it, it could result in an inaccurate diagnosis, and thus an incorrect prescribing of medication.

If you have decided that you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD, we will then set up a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialise in this field. If you'd like to start treatment immediately it is possible to start treatment at the time of diagnosis. You can also take two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and what options you have.

We recommend that if you are unsure about your preferences, you talk to your GP prior to booking your private assessment. Some providers have different guidelines regarding whether or not they require a GP letter. We also recommend to confirm that your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement', which means that once discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the medication prescription.

Medication

For many people who want an individual diagnosis of ADHD, medication is an important part of their journey. Getting a prescription from an NHS psychiatrist can be difficult and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One method to avoid this is to request your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can choose a provider that offers a private assessment and titration service. This can help you to save time and also be more convenient, particularly in the event of a hectic schedule.

If you are referred, your clinician will examine you to determine if you need medication adjustment. You'll have to fill out forms that differ by provider but the most frequent ones are self-reporting forms and medical histories going to childhood and adulthood. They will help your physician identify any conditions that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.

If you are being titrated on medication, it is likely to include a mix of stimulants and non-stimulant medications. These will be carefully assessed and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you. The process of titration can be lengthy and may need a few extra appointments before you are stable on your dose.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will be contingent on the type and amount of medication that you are taking. They can be scheduled for monthly or quarterly. Your doctor will ensure that you are stable with the medication, note any side effects you have experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain on a dose that is safe. You will be required to attend an annual health check-up and regular health check-up that includes pulse, blood pressure, and weight measurements.

For some individuals it could be that they are content with their medication and don't need any further discussion on their titration. If, however, they do need further discussions about the titration process and treatment plan, it's possible to be passed back to the private clinic that made their initial assessment. In this instance the titration is included in the consultation cost. The medication will be administered via the private prescription. It could cost more than an NHS prescription because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
