Private Diagnosis of ADHD
Adult ADHD assessment and treatment is becoming more difficult to access on the NHS due to the long waiting lists. A lot of patients are turning to private clinics for diagnosis and treatment either through out-of-pocket arrangements or right to choose arrangements.
BBC Panorama exposed these clinics. However the process of obtaining a private diagnosis can seem intimidating.
Making an accurate diagnosis
ADHD is an illness that affects people of all ages. Adults suffering from ADHD struggle to manage their symptoms that can create problems at home and at work. A private ADHD assessment can help adults gain the expert insight they require to identify and treat their symptoms.
A trained psychiatrist or clinical psychologist will conduct a private diagnosis of adhd. They will look at your symptoms in detail including how they affect your daily life. They will then develop a plan of treatment that is based on your specific requirements. This will include a discussion of medication and other therapies.
If you're worried that you might have ADHD the first step is to talk to your family doctor. They may refer you to an expert in mental health or suggest you fill out an online questionnaire about your symptoms. After you've completed the questionnaire, a mental healthcare professional will conduct an interview with you and then compare your answers to the checklist. This is referred to as an ADHD assessment, and it can take up to two sessions. It is recommended to have a trusted family member or friend to be with you for an extra source of support.
You may also have a questionnaire to your boss, spouse, or employer to fill out to provide feedback on your symptoms. They will also assess whether you suffer from ADHD as a child or an adult. They will ask you to rate the frequency with which your symptoms manifest and the impact they have on your life. They might also ask you to rate your conduct in different social situations.
Although many people are diagnosed with ADHD as children, some don't get a diagnosis until much later in the course of their lives. This can be a frustrating experience, particularly because medical professionals have preconceived ideas about what someone with ADHD looks like. Be aware that these biases could cause inaccurate or misleading assessments.
A BBC Panorama investigation revealed that some private doctors were overdiagnosing ADHD. This is a problem since an incorrect diagnosis can lead to ineffective or improper treatment. It is essential to select a reputable and experienced provider.
Medication
When someone is diagnosed with ADHD they will usually be prescribed medication. Depending on the person, this could be in the form of stimulant drugs such as dexamphetamine or methylphenidate, antidepressants such as bupropion or atomoxetine or any other non-stimulant medication like guanfacine and topiramate. Many of these drugs are available in extended-release or long-acting formulations, which accumulate slowly in the bloodstream and minimize the risk of side effects.
It is important to note that medication is only able to control ADHD symptoms, and not cure it. If not treated, ADHD can lead to issues with relationships, work and overall wellbeing. It is important that anyone suffering from the disorder is aware of the condition and seeks treatment if they think it is needed.
A medical professional should be the one to diagnose ADHD and determine which kind of treatment is best. This could include a psychiatrist, psychologist or an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). Simply because healthcare professionals are certified in one of these fields does not mean that they are experienced in diagnosing ADHD and comorbidities in children and adults.
Parents who have been able to identify their child with ADHD can be frustrated in obtaining the right treatment frustrating and lengthy. Those who are able to afford it may opt to go private for an evaluation, but the cost for this could be quite high.
There are reports that some private clinics are over-diagnosing ADHD because of inadequate clinical assessments. This can be problematic for patients and GPs, who must accept prescribing arrangements that were created by private clinics or through right-to-choose arrangements.
For adults, it is not possible to get an assessment through the NHS however, it is possible to get an examination privately, such as in a Priory hospital or wellbeing centre. This can be expensive, but it is possible to transfer the diagnosis back to an GP and receive medications under the NHS if the person has been on a stable prescription for a period of time. Certain health insurance plans that are extended will pay for the cost. The charity ADHD Foundation offers a free assessment service for those who are unable to pay.
Therapy
Counseling could be beneficial if not able to resolve ADHD symptoms with medication or if you want to improve your performance in general and need motivation. In therapy the cognitive distortions that create negative thinking patterns such as procrastination and impulsivity are explained to you. You will also learn how to alter these distortions. Your Therapist will also teach you self-management systems to help you cope with your ADHD symptoms.
Counseling can be particularly beneficial for adults who have been abused or neglected in childhood, or who are struggling with their ADHD diagnosis and feel that they've failed their lives because of the disorder's symptoms. They might be feeling guilt or shame over their inability to communicate with other people, especially at school and work. Individual therapy can help you build more positive relationships as well as healthy coping mechanisms for your emotions.
Counselling can help adults suffering from ADHD who are having issues at work. They can discover strategies to overcome obstacles and manage their performance. Your counselor may advise you to inform your professor or boss about your ADHD and request accommodations at workplace or in the classroom. Vocational tests can be very helpful in identifying your strengths and weaknesses, to allow you to tailor your goals to meet them.
A thorough mental health screening is required to establish the proper diagnosis. This is crucial since a myriad of other disorders can appear similar to ADHD and approximately 90% of people who suffer from ADHD will suffer from co-morbid mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, or psychosis. Doctors are concerned that private ADHD clinics may not be conducting full mental health screenings and may be overdiagnosing their patients. A recent study conducted by BJGP discovered that the current assessment processes could be putting vulnerable adults at risk due to the over-use of NHS mental health services with ADHD referrals.
It is long past time to streamline the method of diagnosing and assessing ADHD. We hope that the BBC's Panorama expose will lead to changes in how ADHD is treated and assessed. Adults who suffer from ADHD can still consult an individual provider for a timely and affordable diagnosis.
Support
If you suspect you or someone you know might have ADHD asking about an assessment is the first step. Mention on front page that you or the other person have experienced, and how they have affected your life. This will allow your physician to get a better understanding of what you've been through.
Many people are concerned that the NHS is not taking enough steps to diagnose ADHD. This is a result of a BBC Panorama report which claimed private psychiatrists misdiagnosed the condition. It's true that GPs are overwhelmed with referrals for ADHD assessments and it could take months to see a specialist, which leaves patients feeling anxious and stressed as they wait for an answer.
This is especially difficult for adults, who are typically working and cannot afford to miss work for months while they are waiting. Some are going to private clinics to speed up the diagnosis and get treatment as soon as they can. It can be costly, however, and the cost isn't always covered by health insurance.
Being diagnosed with ADHD can be a source of relief for many, but it also raises issues about their identity and their place in the world. It is important to take the time to sort out your emotions, especially when you're feeling overwhelmed. Talking about them with a friend or therapist can be helpful and some people feel more comfortable connecting with other people online who share similar experiences.
Adults with ADHD may need support at school or work to make sure they can reach their potential. This could include things like breaks in the classroom or extra time during exams and written instructions for tasks. You should discuss any issues with your instructor or supervisor as they may be more inclined than you to make adjustments. A diagnosis of ADHD can also make it easier to talk to your family and friends about mental health issues. A strong support system is crucial and your family members can help you manage your condition through medication, therapy or other strategies that might help you.
