Byron explores the theme of betrayal and feeling 'half broken hearted'. the speaker voices their feelings of anger. this is evident in the violent lexicon 'broken' and 'sever'. both of the words suggest that the couple were united as one and now they have parted it feels like he lost a limb.

to a certain extent both the writers explore their relationship through the use of nature, life and death. Byron's poem has a semantic field of nightmares. however, browning has a semantic field of excitement. through the lines
