12 Companies Are Leading The Way In Good Robot Vacuum
What to Look For in a Good Robot Vacuum

A robot vacuum can keep you on the top of pet hair and lint on a regular basis. Many use apps that allow you to schedule cleaning times and set virtual boundaries or 'walls' to keep them out of areas that you don't want to be cleaned.

This mop and vac creates a map of your home with its first run, storing your home's layout for future tasks. It has an extra-large dustbin that automatically emptys, as well as self-cleaning brush roll.

Object Detection

When you are choosing a robotic vacuum cleaner, pick one that can clean up big items such as toys and lamp cords as well as dust particles that are fine. This will ensure that they don't get stuck in the roller brushes or left on your floor. This is especially important if you have pets or children and may need to clean the robot on a regular basis.

It's also a good idea to select a model that has strong motors and lots of suction power. This will help it be more effective at getting up pet hair, lint and dust off your carpets and hardwood floors.

Another factor to consider is the size of your room. If you have a huge home, you may prefer one with multiple cleaning zones that cover your entire house in one session. Certain models have mopping features that can be used to keep floors looking fresh and clean.

Robot vacuums are durable but they need to be maintained in a timely and efficient manner. Regularly cleaning the rotating brushes and emptying your dust bin, and wiping your sensors will keep your machine functioning efficiently for many years. Many of the owners of robot vacuums we chat with have had the same machine for 10 years or more (and have replaced motors, brushes and batteries in the process).

A basic robot is less expensive than a full size vacuum cleaner. They will still be able to do a fantastic job of cleaning the surface of dirt pet fur, lint and other debris. They're an excellent maintenance tool that you can distribute often throughout the week to keep your floors free of dirt. The downside is they don't offer as much technological innovation, and may be prone to becoming stuck or require human intervention.

automatic vacuum cleaner use sensors, lasers, or cameras to help them navigate your home without falling off or getting stuck on the stairs. They are also able to avoid obstacles like cords and furniture legs, and some models automatically return to their base or dock when they are running low on energy. The most expensive models usually feature mapping capabilities that allow them to remember the design of your home and spend less time bumping into walls.

You don't need to spend lots of money on the most expensive robotic vacuums. You can still find models that do a fantastic job of picking up pet hair and dirt from hard surfaces, such as wood, tile and low-pile rug. They also be capable of handling larger debris like metal screws or staples that have rust, or the remains of toys. Some models come with an automatic base that drains itself, which is a great feature if you do not want to empty it at the end of each cleaning session.

Some robotic vacuums have clever features that make the traditional stick vacuum look quaint. These include schedules, zone-targeting, and the ability to control them using an app or a voice assistant, like Alexa. You can also create cleaning zones and virtual walls to block off areas you don't wish the robot to enter.

Some robotic vacuums, like the Eufy 11S or my former top choice, Roborock S8, come with obstacle avoidance technology that will stop them from falling over furniture or cords. Some robot vacuums, such as the iRobot Roomba j7+ have more advanced AI obstacle-avoidance technology which uses cameras, processors and algorithms to stay clear of items like lamp cords and pet waste. It's a little more expensive than other bots I've tested however, it did a great job of avoiding obstacles around my home and rarely got stuck or derailment when I was cleaning my flooring.

The J7+ from iRobot was a fantastic obstacle avoidance robot, but it did not always succeed at avoiding dirt or crumbs on my rugs. It also was known to over-vacuum certain areas, leading to a lot of dust in the filters and a less tidy home.

Smart Mapping

The best robot vacuums have an app that can help you set up cleaning modes, set schedules and see a map of your area of floor that the machine covers. This is an extremely useful feature that many competitors don't have. This makes it easy to create profiles that will automatically start your robot at specified times and continue to run on a regular basis, like cleaning the living area prior to dinner or on a regular basis.

A good app will also allow you to control your robot using voice commands. Certain models can be controlled by Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start with a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without having to use the app.

For a truly hands-free experience, choose models with a large dust bin that can hold many cleaning sessions before needing to be emptied. You can find models that self-empty, eliminating the requirement to empty the robot after every vacuuming session.

If you're looking for a robot capable of doing more than simply vacuum, you'll need to look into the possibility of a model which can mop your floors. They're usually bigger than robotic vacuums and come with a water tank that can store multiple cleaning sessions' worth of dust and dirt before having to be emptied.

The most advanced robots create their own maps of your home and can even remember the layout from one cleaning to the next and help them avoid getting lost or stuck in corners. This can make a huge difference in the efficiency of your robot vacuums, since it won't be spending time returning to the beginning of the room whenever it comes into contact with walls or furniture.

Our testers found that robots with this feature were extremely efficient. They could watch TV or complete other things while the robot was cleaning. Some models use laser navigation to create an outline of your home. You can program them to clean the bedroom after dinner, or all rooms while you're working.

App Control

If you want to customize how often the robot cleans your home and select a cleaning mode it is recommended to purchase one that works with an app that can be downloaded on mobile. You can also check the state of the vacuum and the state of its dust bin within the app. Some of the best vacuums that are robotic can be controlled using Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri Shortcuts.

A robot that self-empties a bin and washable filters is simple to keep hygienic, especially if you can easily access the filter and take it off it to rinse it. Another great feature is a high-powered brush that is able to reach into corners and along baseboards, making it easier to remove hair and dirt. Some robots are more adept in avoiding chair legs than others. Others have sensors that automatically clean brushes to prevent the clogging.

Some robo-vacs use navigation tools that help them learn your home and get around obstacles. The top models utilize sensors and cameras to recognize obstacles such as furniture, stairs and cords. Cheaper models may utilize boundaries to mark areas you don't want it to go. Avoidance of objects is crucial for families with young children who throw socks and toys scattered around the house, as it allows your robot to grab those objects instead of scattering them.

We're starting to see more robots that have mops, which are useful for those who have hard floors and require to clean them regularly. These robots have an integrated water tank into the chassis, or a separate piece which you can change out when you're ready to mop. They may require frequent refills but they're ideal for homes with hard floors that can't be easily cleaned by a vacuum.

These robots are packed with some impressive technology, and they cost a lot less than you'd expect. In fact, you can get an affordable model for less than $200 that does a decent job of getting rid of pet hair and crumbs off hard floors, while traversing the edges of lightweight carpets or area carpets. You can schedule the robot to clean rooms on a regular basis and it can be controlled remotely via the app or by pressing buttons on its side.
