both poets write about their attitude towards love and explore hopeful emotions. Elizabeth's poem is about a optimistic and a happy leading-to-a-marriage relationship that provides a 'deep joy'. this is portrayed in the line 'who art dearer, better!'. this hyperbolic language technique refers that the speaker has a very intimate lexicon and is trying to create an image of the ideal perfect spouse that no one can replace. this engenders a sense of rhetorical lexicon. Byron explores the theme of betrayal and the phrase 'half broken-hearted' implies that he still feels a sense of inner turmoil. the speaker voices their feelings of anger. this is evident in the violent lexicon 'broken' and 'sever'. both of the words suggest that the couple were united as one and now they have parted it feels like he lost a limb.

to a certain extent both the writers explore their relationship through the use of nature, life and death. on several occasions, Byron creates a semantic field of nightmares through words such as 'warning' and 'chill' . in contrast, browning creates a semantic field of excitement through words such as 'shattered' and 'burst'. in the metaphor 'knell', the writer conjures up an image of death and darkness because it reminds the reader of the sounds of funeral bells. in the poem 'sonnet XXIX' the theme of overwhelm is portrayed through the words 'wild' and 'straggling'.

Byron and Barrett-browning explores the negative and positive aspects of love through the conventions of commitment. the reader pities the speaker when the lexicon 'silence' and 'tears' is used because it creates an impression of despair and confusion. the sibilance 'share in its shame' shows Byron's feelings of rejection due to the fact that he was ashamed and embarrassed that he was a mistress. whilst Byron was writing the poem he refers to the subject as 'thy' instead of Frances due to their affair. on the other hand, the word 'insphere' creates a theme of passion. the writer refers to different tenses in order to explore the different stages of love. whilst browning writes about the future, Byron writes about the past, present and future and he implies that he was in love with his partner a those times.
