What is a heatpump?


A heat pump is a HVAC system that uses electricity to provide both cooling and heating. It is a system that is very similar to the one in your air conditioner and refrigerator in that it evaporates liquid refrigerant, which absorbs heat from the surroundings, including the surrounding air. This heat is then transferred inside through a series of metal coils and fan. heat-pump tumble dryer use less energy than furnaces, boilers or electric radiators to create heat because they extract their thermal energy from the air and ground rather than creating it through combustion or electrical resistance.

A heat pump functions as an air conditioner in cooling mode, absorbing ambient heat from the air outside even when it is cold, and transferring it inside. The coil absorbs heat from your home's air because heat naturally flows towards areas with lower pressure and temperatures. Then it moves to the outdoor unit, where a compressor increases its pressure and raises its temperature even further. This causes the boiling point of the liquid to drop and it reverts back to the state of liquid.

When the liquid refrigerant leaves the compressor, it goes through an additional coil in the outdoor unit. This coil is referred to as an evaporator when the heat pump is heating and condenser in the case of cooling. The outdoor coil draws heat from the air by using aluminum fins that help it transfer that heat to the evaporator.

The evaporator of the indoor heat pump features an air-flow fan that blows air over the aluminum or copper coils that have grooved surfaces to increase the surface area and aid heat transfer. The fan keeps the air moving at a reasonable speed to minimize drafts and reduce noise. Some models come with a desuperheater that recovers heat from the evaporator while it is in cooling mode and uses that heat to efficiently heat water.

What are the advantages of an air conditioner?

When it comes to saving energy and minimizing your environmental impact, there's not an HVAC system more eco-friendly than a heat pump. As state and local governments continue offering rebates and incentives to homeowners who choose to switch, this climate-friendly technology continues to gain traction. The Department of Energy is touting the advantages of these systems over traditional heating systems.

Heating pumps unlike gas furnaces, use metal coils to transfer thermal energy from the air. Because they don't require fuel, unlike combustion heaters they don't emit any emissions or other harmful pollutants.
