The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very good score on mid pile, too. It did a good job of removing pet hair, but it struggled with extremely thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots in our list despite the slight limitations. It's also less expensive than other top-of the-line models. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd like to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you might find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is available for use immediately. After you have removed the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will return to its dock when its battery is out or it's stuffed with debris. It also has indicator lights on the top to indicate when its bin is full or it requires recharging, or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
