What to Look For in a Good Robot Vacuum
A robot vacuum can help keep you on top of pet hair and lint on daily bases. Many robot vacuums have apps that allow you to schedule cleaning sessions. You can also set virtual boundaries, or "walls," to keep the vacuum away from areas you don't want cleaned.
This smart vac and mop creates a map of your home with its first trip, and then it will remember your space for future use. It comes with self-cleaning brush rolls as well as an extra-large dust bin that empty automatically.
Object Detection
When you are choosing a robotic vacuum, make sure you choose one that is able to pick up large objects, such as lamps and toys and also dust particles. This will ensure that the items don't get stuck in the roller brushes or left on your floor. This is especially crucial if your robot is going to be regularly cleaned by children or pets.
It's recommended to choose a model with an efficient motor and plenty of suction power. This will make it more effective at getting up pet hair, lint, and dust from your carpets and hardwood floors.
Another factor to consider is the size of your space. If you live in a big house, you may want to opt for models with multiple cleaning zones that can cover the entire home in a single session. Some models also come with mopping functions that can be used to keep your floors looking fresh and clean.
Robot vacuums can last for a long time however, they must be maintained regularly and in a proper manner. Cleaning the rotating brushes and emptying the dust container and wiping the sensors clean regularly will ensure that your robot is running efficiently for the years to be. Many owners of robot vacuums that we have spoken with have owned the same model for a period of 10 years or more (and replaced brushes, motors and batteries in the process).
A basic robot will cost less than a full-sized vacuum cleaner, but they'll still do an excellent job at keeping up with surface dirt, pet hair, and lint. You can use them to sweep your floors several times per day. The drawback is that they don't offer as much advanced technology, and could be prone to becoming stuck or requiring human intervention.
Object Avoidance
The best robot vacs use sensors, lasers, or cameras to guide them around your home without falling off or getting stuck on the stairs. Certain models are able to return to their dock or base when their battery is depleted. They can also avoid obstacles such as furniture cords and legs. The ones that are more expensive usually come with mapping capabilities that permit them to memorize the layout of your home and reduce the amount of time you're running into walls.
If you don't want to splurge on the most advanced robotic vacuums, you could locate a model that is capable of picking up pet hair dirt, dust, and debris from floors that are hard like wood and tile and carpets with a low pile. They can also handle larger debris such as nails with rusty screws, metal screws or even toys that have been discarded. Some have a base that automatically empties itself, which is a great feature if you do not want to empty it at the end of each cleaning session.
Many robotic vacuums also come with advanced features that make your regular stick vacuum appear ancient, including zones, schedules, and the ability to control them via an app or a voice assistant like Alexa. You can also set up cleaning zones and virtual walls to block off areas that you don't wish robots to access.
Some robotic vacs like the Eufy 11S and my former top pick Roborock S8 Roborock S8, have obstacle avoidance technology that stops them from crashing into furniture or tangling cords. Others, like the iRobot Roomba j7+, have more sophisticated AI obstacle avoidance that uses cameras and processor-powered smarts to identify and avoid items like shoes, lamp cords, socks, and pet waste. It is a little bit more expensive than other bots that I've tried, however it does an excellent job of avoiding obstacles and never is stuck or tripped while working on my floor.
While the iRobot j7+ was a good obstacle avoidance robot but it wasn't always able to do an excellent job of avoiding dirt and crumbs from my carpets. It also tended to over-vacuum some areas, which resulted in lots of dust in the filter and an unclean home.
Smart Mapping
A few of the top robot vacuums have an app that lets you customize cleaning modes, set schedules and see the area of floor that the machine covers. This is a very useful feature that other models don't have. This allows you to create profiles that will automatically start the robot at certain times and continue to run regularly. For example, it could be cleaning the living room every day, or just before dinner.
A good app will also allow you to control your robot via voice commands. Some models support Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start with a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without using the app.
Choose models with an enormous dust bin. This allows you to complete many cleaning sessions without needing to empty it. There are models that are self-emptying that take some of the burden of emptying the robot after each cleaning run.
If automatic vacuum cleaner looking for a robot that can do more than simply vacuum, you'll need to look into the possibility of a model which can mop your floors. These are usually larger than robotic vacuums and come with a water tank that can hold multiple cleaning sessions worth of dust and dirt before having to be emptied.
Robots that are more advanced can develop their own maps and keep track of the layout of your home from one cleaning session to the next, preventing them from getting lost or stuck. This can make a big difference in the speed at which your robot vacuums, as it won't be spending time going back to the beginning of the room if it encounters furniture or walls.
Our testers found that robots with this feature were very efficient. They could watch TV or do other tasks while the robot was cleaning. Some models employ laser navigation and can make an exact map of your home, which means that you can program them to clean only the bedroom after dinner or every room in the house while you're working.
App Control
If you're looking to change the frequency at which the robot cleans your house and select the cleaning mode you should choose one that is compatible with a mobile app. You can also check the state of the vacuum and the state of its dust bin in the app. Some of the most effective robot vacuums can be controlled via voice with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts.
It is easy to maintain a robot that has an washable filter and self-emptying container, particularly when the filter is easily cleaned and washed. A powerful brush is another excellent feature that can reach into corners and along baseboards to get rid of dirt and hair. Certain robots are better at avoiding chair legs than others, and some also have a self-cleaning sensor that prevents the blockage of brushes that could happen in other robots.
Some robo-vacs have navigation tools that aid them in navigating obstacles and to learn about your home. The top models utilize sensors and cameras to detect obstacles like furniture, stairs and cords. The cheaper models could use boundary strips to mark areas you don't want to see it go. Object avoidance is especially important for families with children who leave socks and toys scattered around the house, as it assists your robot in capturing the items instead of scattering them.
We're starting to see more robots with mops, which are beneficial for those who have hard floors and need to clean them regularly. They come with water tanks built into the chassis or an extra piece you can swap in when you're ready to mop. They might need to be refilled more often than other types of robots, however they're ideal for homes with hard floors that can't be easily cleaned with a vacuum.
We've seen some incredible technology packed into these little robots, and they're a lot cheaper than you expect. You can get a good one for less than $200, and it does a decent cleaning job on hard floors, while also navigating around the edges of carpets and area carpets. The robot can be programmed to vacuum a particular room on a regular schedule. It can be controlled remotely through an app or by pressing buttons.
