The Advantages of Heat Pump Technology
A heat pump system that operates on clean electricity can reduce household carbon emissions by 75 percent when compared to the gas heater.

What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is a HVAC system that uses electricity to provide both heating and cooling. It uses a system very similar to that of your refrigerator or air conditioner. It evaporates refrigerant liquid that absorbs heat, as well as the air around. This heat is then transferred inside through a series of metal coils and fan. Heat pumps generate heat with much less energy than electric radiators and furnaces because they make use of thermal energy derived from air or the ground instead of generating it through combustion or electrical resistance.
Heat pumps work like air conditioners that cool. They absorb ambient heat from the outside even in cold weather and then transfer it to. It can also function as a heater during winter, when a switch that reverses is switched off, converting the refrigerant back to liquid before evaporating. The heat is then dragged indoors through a fan and copper tubes within the indoor unit.

How does a heat pump function?

The technology behind a Heat Pump is similar to that of an air conditioner. The system consists of two main parts including an outdoor unit which appears like the outside unit of a split air conditioning system, and an indoor unit that houses an electric coil that can serve as an condenser or evaporator. The system contains a fan that is able to blow air across the coil to help transfer heat. The refrigerant inside the coil is liquid at ambient temperature, but when it gets hot inside the house, it turns into a gas. A reversing valve located near the compressor can alter the direction of the refrigerant's flow, allowing it to switch between cooling and heating modes.
The coil absorbs heat from your home's air since heat naturally moves towards areas that have lower temperatures and pressure. Then, it goes to the outside unit where the compressor increases the pressure and temperature. This causes the boiling point of the liquid to decrease and it then returns to a liquid state.
As the refrigerant liquid leaves the compressor, it passes through a second coil that's located in the outdoor unit. This coil is called a condenser when it's in cooling mode, and an evaporator when the heat pump is in heating mode. The outdoor coil pulls heat out of the air by using aluminum fins that assist in transferring that heat to the evaporator.
The fan on the evaporator of the indoor heat pump blows air over the aluminium or copper coils. These coils have grooved surfaces to increase the surface area and help in heat transfer. The fan keeps an air flow that is comfortable to minimize drafts and noise. Some models include a desuperheater which recovers the wasted heat from the evaporator during cooling mode and utilizes it to efficiently heat water inside your home.
What are the benefits of an air conditioner?
In terms of saving energy and minimizing your environmental impact, there's no HVAC system more eco-friendly than a heat pump. As state and local governments continue to offer incentives and rebates to homeowners who make the change, this climate-friendly technology continues to gain popularity. The Department of Energy touts their advantages over traditional heating methods.
In contrast to gas furnaces, heat pumps use metal coils and fans to transfer energy from the air. They do not burn fuel like a heater that is based on combustion, so they don't produce any emissions or other harmful pollutants. This also means that heat pumps don't need a chimney to vent exhaust fumes out of the house. Heat pumps are also incredibly quiet. They operate at a fraction the volume of gas furnaces.

What are the disadvantages of a heat pump?
Heat pumps aren't any different. They come with their own advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages are the efficiency of energy and the environmental benefits. The heat pumps, unlike furnaces that burn fossil fuels to generate heat, use renewable energy sources to transport thermal energy out of the air or the ground into your home. They are also more efficient than traditional heating systems and can save money on electric bills.
Heat pumps cost more to buy than furnaces, but they pay for themselves in the long run with lower operating costs. They are also noisy, but new designs are helping to reduce the noise. They are most effective in homes that are insulated and hermetic. They also perform best in mild temperatures.
