Star Wars is Making Me Happy
rolex uhr

by Tom Farr
Last weekend, I took my two oldest children, Lucy (7) and Kalel (5), to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was my third time to see it, but for my children, it was an exciting first — their first Star Wars movie theater experience.
My children have heard me talking about Star Wars their whole lives, so they’ve been fans of these characters — Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2, and Chewbacca — whose stories they don’t quite understand yet.
In watching The Force Awakens, it was fun to see my daughter get into Rey as a compelling female character who is the clear hero of the new trilogy. I loved hearing her say, “Wow. She’s really good with that light saber.”
It was equally fun to watch my son get into Kylo Ren because he’s been a fan of Darth Vader for a couple years now. Of course, my son doesn’t quite understand the dark side yet. To him, Kylo Ren, like Darth Vader, is this crazy awesome Force user with a killer light saber.
Watching The Force Awakens with my children made me happy.
After watching The Force Awakens for the third time, I decided to read the official novelization by Alan Dean Foster. I love movies, but I also love reading. Since The Force Awakens so far is the story I can’t get enough of, reading the novelization just made sense. Given that it’s risen to the number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller List, it’s clear I’m not the only one. Reading the novelization was fun because it included scenes that weren’t in the movie as well as elaborated on scenes that were in the movie.
Reading The Force Awakens Official Novelization made me happy.
Since I’m on this trend of The Force Awakens, one of the things I really enjoyed most about this past week was getting the book The Art of the Force Awakens by Phil Szostak. What I loved about this book, other than the beautiful artwork throughout, was the journey through the development process of The Force Awakens. It was intriguing to learn that Rey was originally a character named Kira and that the earlier version of Kylo Ren was a Darth Vader-like figure only known as Jedi Killer. There’s even some artwork of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader as a force ghost.
I’m a storyteller and I’ve long admired the work of J.J. Abrams. As a storyteller, when I create something new, I want it to be great the first time. I think every creator does.
The Art of The Force Awakens was a refreshing reminder that great writing is rewriting. The story of Star Wars: Episode VII was drastically different from its initial stages to the finished film we all saw in theaters. With Star Wars, there are a lot of ideas that could come about. The story could go anywhere. The Art of The Force Awakens was a fun walk-through of a story’s evolution.
As a creator and as a fan, The Art of the Force Awakens made me happy.
Creating and enjoying what others have created make me happy. I love watching other people create things that are profound, thought-provoking, and innovative. I love watching my kids create and continue to evolve in their creative exploration. And I love the creative process in my own life when I write a new story.
That’s what’s making me happy lately. What’s making you happy?
