How to Choose the Best Coffee Pod Machine
A pod machine is a great option for those looking to get a quick and mess-free morning cup of coffee. But how do you choose the best one?
In a nod towards retro design, this machine sports the SMEG and Lavazza branding across its front. It is more expensive and requires a larger space on your counter. It's a premium pod coffee maker that feels solid.
1. best coffee machines with pods
If you're a Nespresso fan, you'll need to choose a coffee pod machine that's compatible with the capsules of the brand. You might want to select one that can use other capsules, like organic and Fairtrade or specialty flavored pods. These models are priced similarly to the originals. Some even come with an integrated frother that lets you to make a cappuccino latte or other specialty flavoured pods.
Bruvi's entry into the pod machine market in 2022 was greeted with excitement. The brightly-colored device promised three things: a more flavorful cup of coffee than other pod machines, a broad selection of drinks and pods that you could throw in the bin without worry about the environmental impact.
It's a winner on all three counts. The pod coffee maker is small and inexpensive, yet it produces an incredibly rich and robust cup of espresso every time. It's one of the quietest machines on market. You can make a cup of Joe even before your alarm goes off.
The Bruvi comes with two sizes of cups and can be adjusted to match the type of beverage you're making. It comes with three settings for temperature and texture of the milk while making either a cappuccino, or Latte. It can even make hot chocolate, which is perfect for adults or kids who just want to warm up and relax.
Another big plus is the programable sleep mode, which goes to standby after a period of one hour of non-use. It's also easy to clean and requires very little water. If you want to keep your electricity costs low, consider opting for one that comes with a removable capsule holder for easier emptying.
There are several other accessories you can add to your coffee pod machine, including a milk frother (unless it's included in the model you buy). Other things to consider are an reusable filter that can be used with capsules that are reusable, a water kettle or thermometer to ensure precise temperature control and a travel cup.
2. Easy to Clean
A coffee pod machine is an easy method to start your morning with a hot cup coffee. In a few minutes you'll be enjoying freshly brewed coffee. Simply add a pod and then switch it on. They are simple to clean and don't require daily maintenance. They just require a water tank refill and descaling about every six months.
Keurig's K-Cups offer the widest selection on the market. They include national brands like Folgers and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as along with grocery store favorites Dunkin' Donuts and Dunkin' Donuts. There are also alternatives to coffee, such as hot cocoa and tea available in K-Cup form from various brands. However, you don't have to use Keurig's K-Cups to make a fantastic cup of coffee. In fact, you can also make use of filter capsules that can be reused made of plastic or paper that can hold ground coffee or pre-loaded drip pods, as well as loose coffee grounds.
However, many of these pod-based machines aren't known for delivering an intense, rich cup that can stand up to the most discerning palate. We found certain pod coffee makers to produce watery or bitter cups of coffee. Others were so difficult operate that they occupied a lot of space on your counter and tended to run loudly.
There are high-end coffee makers that have the convenience and consistency of single-serve machines but without the wasteful packaging and disappointing taste. Some include a built-in frother to froth and pour your cappuccino or latte while others have a separate frother you can plug into the machine to create a deliciously foamy top to your drinks.
In addition to making a great brew the newer pod coffee machines have taken steps to address the growing concerns about the environmental impact that come with using plastic-based single-serve pods. Keurig and Nespresso have made their aluminum pods recyclable by replacing them with polypropylene. The latter also offers free capsule recycling bags that are dropped off at any store or UPS facility. A recently launched competitor, Bruvi, uses its own pods that can be used in its own brewer and have been designed to break down in landfills quickly and without leaving microplastics behind.
3. Fast Brewing
If you do not want the hassle of grinding beans or boiling kettles, a pod coffee maker is a great time saver. These nifty devices can make your cup of coffee, espresso or tea in mere minutes, with no cleanup. These machines produce more waste than drip-style counterparts, however they are still much easier to use than making whole beans in a French Press or Pour-Over.
A company based in LA called Bruvi released its BV-01 pod-based machine at the end of 2022. It promised to make more flavorful single serve coffee and offer a wider variety of drinks than the many other pod-based machine and deliver recyclable capsules that could be thrown out without breaking down into tiny microplastics. Although the Bruvi brewer is more than Keurig or Nespresso however, it is a great device all around that feels like a dawning of a new age in pod coffee.
When purchasing a coffee pod machine the size of the serving is an important aspect to take into consideration. Certain models can serve single-serve cups that come in a wide variety of sizes, from large travel mugs all the way to 2-ounce espresso shots. Some machines can make whole pots of coffee. Some even have milk frothers that can be added to create the creamy cappuccino, latte or Latte.
Another important factor to be considered is the design of a pod coffee machine. The color and finish of the machine, as well as the location and size of the water reservoir and pod compartment will determine the appearance of your machine on your kitchen counter. Some brands offer different colored pods so you can alter your drink according to the season or mood.
Pod coffee makers are typically designed to be small, taking up less space than traditional single-serve and drip brewers. While a compact footprint is nice however, it's essential to ensure that the machine has enough capacity to brew several cups in between refills. The majority of pod coffee makers should be equipped with a water tank of at 40 ounces or more for the average household.
4. Variety of Drinks
Pod machines are surprisingly versatile and, based on the brand you select, can make all manner of drinks. Certain brands, like Keurig, which is a well-known system and Sage's Nespresso collaboration, can brew four different sizes of drinks, whereas others offer just one or two. Certain machines also can make hot cocoa, tea and cold drinks.
Some pod coffee machines can also make frothy cappuccinos and lattes, thanks to built-in milk frothers. Others, however, require an additional or conjoined jug for this task. The top milk-frothing coffee machines are easy to operate and provide precise control. They also have a sleek design which fits into any kitchen.
The Grind One makes a great model. It's a sleek design that's a step away from the curves that you see on other pod coffee makers. It is smaller than most Keurig models which makes it perfect for kitchens with small spaces or dorm rooms. The reservoir can hold up to 40 inches of water and is easily accessible. Used capsules are automatically deposited in an attached container. Other than maintaining the reservoir's capacity and descaling every six months or therefore, the machine requires little maintenance.
This machine is more costly than other models we've reviewed but it provides a high-quality experience. The drip tray can be adjusted so that it can fit tall travel mugs or shorter espresso cups. It can brew five different drinks thanks to a unique barcode system that scans every compatible pod and then automatically adjusts its settings to create the perfect cup.
This is the most attractive coffee pod machine we've seen and offers a superb-tasting beverage, particularly for an automatic. We didn't award this machine the top spot because it's not able to milk froth. Its only option is to use dried skimmed milk capsules which don't taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. We would have given this machine high marks if it had an integrated milk frother.
