Double Glazed Door Repairs
Double-glazed windows and doors keep draughts and noise away and allow heat to pass through. This minimizes disruption caused by barking dogs as well as traffic on nearby roads. They also serve as a security measure against burglars since they're hard to break.
However, just like other home improvement product, they can suffer from problems at times. This article will discuss some of the most frequent issues and solutions.
Broken panes
A rogue pebble from the lawn mower a drink set down too heavily on the glass-topped table, or the sudden weight of snow could break windows. The result is that your home is exposed to weather and can be a dreadful sight. Fortunately, double paned windows can be repaired by replacing the broken glass and rebuilding the frame. A professional window company can provide glass panes that can be replaced, but the repair is fairly simple to fix yourself if you have experience with wood-frame windows and a few tools.
The first step in repairing damaged windows is to remove the old window and glazing points from the frame. This requires some attention because the old glass is often hard and brittle. Wear gloves and a mask to guard yourself from flying bits of glass. Use a putty knife to remove the old glazing compound and the glazing points from the recesses of the frames.
Measure the opening for the new glass after you have removed the old one. The pane should be slightly smaller than the rabbet grooves to allow the window to expand and contract in response to the weather's changes. Hardware stores can cut panes precisely to the required dimensions.
After the new pane is positioned, roll a cord of glaziers' putty around the perimeter of the frame and into the glass-frame joint. If the putty is difficult to work, use a knife to dip it in linseed oil to soften it. Smooth the compound into the joint to create a clean and even joint.
When the putty has dried, paint over it with a quality exterior house paint and allow it to set completely. If you don't have any exterior paint, you may also finish your putty with wood varnish. Just be sure to remove the varnish from the glass before attempting to re-glaze it. This will prevent the putty from sticking to the glass and leaving a water stain that could cause permanent damage.
Misted panes
Double glazing is a fantastic option to keep your home looking clean and modern. But, if you've got double glazing with misted or condensation in between panes it's not just ugly but it can make your home feel uncomfortable and cold.
Double-glazed windows are created by sealing two panes of glass together, and then filling the gap with air or gas (such as xenon or argon) to create an insulation barrier that keeps heat in and cold out. However, over time, this seal may fail due to a variety of reasons. These include aging, environmental factors such as high humidity levels and temperature fluctuations and problems with the installation.
If your double-glazed windows are starting to become misty, it's crucial to repair the issue in the earliest time possible. If talks about it leave it untreated, it could cause further damage and decrease the energy efficiency of your home.
Fortunately, repairing your double-glazed windows is easy. You can use a desiccant bag to absorb moisture and re-instate the air seal, or drill holes into the window and clean the area using ruby alcohol. This method, however, requires a certain degree of DIY expertise and is not recommended for people who aren't comfortable drilling into their double pane windows.
Another great alternative is to put an unsoaked towel between the window panes. This will help absorb moisture and prevent future build-up of condensation. Once the towel has been saturated, let it rest for a night. Then, wash the window with water to eliminate the vinegar that has accumulated.
There are kits available that allow you to repair double-glazed windows without drilling holes. The glass is cleared from the outside with dry pellets which disappear with time. These kits are cheap and highly efficient in eliminating condensation from your double-glazed window. It is important to keep in mind that this solution is only effective for a brief period of time and may have to be repeated depending on the amount moisture in the air between your windows.
Sagging panes
Over time, windows may begin to lose their shape in the event that they are not properly supported or fastened. The windows that are sagging are not just unsightly but also indicate that the seals on the frame and glass have failed. This reduces the energy efficiency. Condensation that is visible could be an indication of a sealant failing. It's also a sign that it's time to be replaced. The space between the panes of double-paned windows is usually filled with silica gel which is capable of absorbing water vapor and helping prevent condensation. This is the main reason why double-paned glass windows are more energy efficient than single-paned windows.
Sagging windows can be corrected by securing the bottom of the frame with L-brackets. This will help to prevent the sash from sliding downwards until it sinks below the lower hinge shoe and starts to lose its shape. This can be easily done by a double-glazing repair firm and is a reasonably affordable method to fix your sagging windows.
Broken seals
The window seals of modern double glazed windows play an important part in keeping your home efficient and free of drafts. They are susceptible to being damaged or worn out, and even impacted by extreme weather conditions. When the uPVC seal is broken, cold air can enter your home during winter, and hot air could escape in summer. This can increase your cooling and heating costs.
It is possible to have damaged seals if you see drafts coming from the window frame or if the glass appears to be fogging. This is a clear indication that the seals are damaged and the gas (usually argon or Krypton) which was sealed between the two panes has escaped and allowed moisture to enter the window. Unattended moisture can lead to mold and dampness which could be hazardous to your family's health and comfort.
Another sign of a broken window seal is the appearance of condensation that is unable to be removed either from the outside or the inside of your glass. This is a common issue with modern double-pane windows that are sealed by an inert gas which can form when the air temperature and glass temperature conflict. If your windows are still insulating the property and providing a comfortable living space, it is unlikely that the seals have failed or blown out, but that they are just old and need to be replaced.
In the final analysis, make sure that the frame of the window and the area around the glass are free from any chips, cracks, or discoloration. These signs of damage could indicate that the frame has moved around the glass panes which could cause the seals to break. It is recommended that your windows are professionally replaced every year, at a minimum, to ensure that they are working properly.
There are a myriad of ways to reseal your windows. The best option is based on the condition and deterioration of your windows. To ensure that you are using the correct materials and techniques, it is recommended to consult with a professional before attempting any DIY project for your windows.
