Self-Empting Robot Vacuums
It can be frustrating to have empty your robot vacuum after each cleaning session, especially those who suffer from allergies. In addition, dirt and debris are thrown back into the air every time you empty the robot.
Self-emptying bases limit your exposure to dust by letting the robot move debris from its bin into a bigger trash bin when it's full.
The Samsung Jet Bot+
Samsung's robot is the most advanced robot we've ever tested. It has excellent filtration as well as a fantastic navigation system and hand-free emptying of the dustbin. It also comes with HEPA filtration and can lock in airborne particles to prevent allergies. The top of the device is a rotating brush bar with soft bristles that can get into the tight corners. It also comes with self cleaning extractors that grind hairs in order to avoid tangles.
The Jet Bot picked up a large amount of debris from my carpets and hardwood floors when I tested it. It missed a few small things in the corner of my dining room and required a second look at them, but it was very effective overall. Compared to the Roomba, it edged the win on my tests because its side brush was able to reach better on edges and was more effective in terms of removing smaller pieces of debris.
The Samsung Jet Bot is controlled by the SmartThings app and can be configured to automatically clean at times that are most convenient for you. It can be programmed to clean certain rooms or areas. You can also set virtual no-go zones and physical ones.
It uses LiDAR sensors that are similar to those used by self-driving automobiles to map and navigate, plus a camera at the front for smart object recognition. This is a feature that assists in avoiding collisions with furniture or other objects and to determine the most efficient path between rooms. It will also identify any objects it thinks are "poop", and make an educated guess.
The SmartThings application lets you set up cleaning schedules, monitor the status of the robot, and keep track of what's happening in the world map. The app can be programmed to alert you when the robot's bin becomes full. It will then return to its dock to empty itself prior to continuing its cleaning. The 0.3L dustbin can be easily cleaned and emptied as it is completely enclosed.
The Roomba 980 from iRobot
The Roomba 980 is iRobot's top-of the top-of-the-line robot, and is also the most expensive. It's also a great performer that is in the same class as the best self-emptying robot vacuums for its sheer cleaning power due to its HEPA filter and powerful battery. It also comes with a clever small feature known as CarpetBoost which automatically boosts the power of the vacuum when it senses that it is on carpet.
This model is similar to the previous models, with an elongated frame and a clear window on top with cameras. The camera is what provides this model with some serious smarts. It uses the camera for VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization Mapping), by looking out for distinctive features and remembering the features. It compares the information with data from the position gyro and IMU, as well as wheel odometry, to create an outline of where it is.
It's an extremely clever system, and it actually does pretty well on carpets, which is where the Roomba generally has a tougher time than on hard surfaces. The 980 also has other smart features, such as the ability to create the weekly routine for cleaning and play a sound to help you locate your robot. The front has a large "Clean" which will turn on your robot. There are also indicators that indicate when it's charging or connected to Wi-Fi as well as when the bin is full.
If you're looking to tidy up a little mess, the 980 also has an option for spot cleaning that's quite basic, but it's not as thorough in covering space as the most advanced options out there. Finally, if you've got some wires that are dangerous to your robot, there's a virtual wall feature where you can create a barrier which tells it to not go near it.
The software that comes with the 980 is very easy to use and gives you a visual overview of the tasks your robot is performing. You can also create your schedule and experiment with other settings, like bin capacity and reduced power mode, and many more.
The Roomba iRobot 960 from iRobot
iRobot is a brand that is synonymous with robot vacuums. The Roomba 960, which costs $700, falls somewhere in the middle. It's a little cheaper than the top of the line 980, but it has many of the same features. This includes the ability to use a camera for navigation and a mobile app that provides detailed cleaning maps. It also has a Virtual Wall, which creates an invisible barrier that the Roomba will not cross.
The 960 did well in our tests, particularly on floors with no floor. It picked up a lot of cat litter, food crumbs and tracked in dirt. It is also adept in climbing over obstacles such as stair runners and the legs of tables and chairs. It also sucked up pet hair too, although it did struggle with some smaller particles like baking soda.
The 960 is different from other Roomba models in that it has a separate dustbin to collect large debris. This reduces the necessity for regular maintenance. The bin can be emptied by pressing a button through the iRobot Home app, or by using voice commands from Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
The iRobot HOME App allows you to personalize every cleaning cycle. You can set the number passes and select from a variety of modes like edge clean, or a full room sweep. It also sends an alert when it's nearly to empty the dirt container.
The 960 is easy to operate, with buttons on the top and buttons within the iRobot HOME app or through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It's also easy to maintain, with an indicator at the top that shows battery's lifespan and a docking station that automatically transfers debris from the dirt compartment to the bin when you're ready to empty it. The iRobot HOME App can also provide you with instructional videos and show the location of every object it has gathered. The battery life of the 960 isn't great however it's good enough to allow most people to run through the day without worrying about having to recharge it before sleeping. The iRobot HOME App is available on both iOS and Android devices.
The iRobot Roomba 970
The Roomba 970 is a robot vacuum cleaner that works with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. It uses the similar advanced navigation system used by other new iRobot models and can detect stairs, which is something that could be a problem with other vacuums. It also uses an internal camera to scan the floor while it moves and detect walls, furniture and other obstacles to ensure that it doesn't bump into things. It can also set limits for the robot by using the virtual wall tool.
This model differs from previous models as it utilizes lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel metal hydroide. sources tell me 's now running longer between charges and also has more endurance in cleaning sessions. It's not as quick as the Shark AI Robot but it can navigate an area effortlessly.
Like the other models of the 960 series the 970 is controlled using the iRobot app and connects to your Wi-Fi network without installation required. It has an incredibly small handle on the front that you can use to manually return it to its charger, and a spot-cleaning button lets you concentrate on a specific area in your home. The 960 robots utilize the same three-stage process used by the other current iRobot machines, combining the power-lifting and agitation to thoroughly clean the floor and get rid of dirt.
The 960 works well on bare floors and can pick up a lot of hair, dust, and other debris with its brushrolls as well as powerful suction. However, it has a difficult time with carpet with high pile and will leave a little sand in its tunnel. It has a large dirt compartment that can be notified when it's full through an app or indicator on the top of the robot. It can be programmed to clean on a schedule and we found it simple to set it up during our tests.
