Darwin had help from an unlikely source. he was on his trip around the world. He noticed that plant and animal breeders used inherited variations to improve crops and livestock. so looking at, people that were farmers, he was also looking at peoples that were breeders. at his time it was very popular to bred chickens. they breed roosters to have elaborate headdresses etc. that's one of the areas he looked at first. tit was very interesting to see that the parent had this elaborate headdress, and than it's being traded around between breeders to try to create other elaborate chickens and thing like that. but then he started to look at farmers and he said it made sense if I'm a farmer and I'm going to grow corn, i would like to have the best seed to produce the beast corn. farmers had to select they're seeds carefully.
people selected the traits they wanted in dogs and made a dog. fitness is not universal. inhered a bad traits the animal will die.
