What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great method to fix your gear before you are at the trailhead for a professional repair. The trick is to know what to do when you need it.

Tools

It is crucial to have the proper tools on to hand when out in the field. This kit was created with this in mind, and includes all of the basic hand tools required for repairing items on the field. The tools are made of metal and have the smallest amount of plastic, so they can withstand use. The kit comes complete with a zippered canvas coalcracker tool pouch, reamer, twisted awl cutting shears and Gimlet (5MM) wooden spool of sinue, a bottle of coalcracker tool oil and a set illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gear, you might want to consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches made of heavy-duty materials have high-performance glue that is applied to a tough polyurethane back which allows a tear under pressure to heal. Available in clear or colored options, these patches provide durability against abrasions, moisture, sunlight, saltwater and extreme temperatures.

If your kit does not contain any of the above items, think about adding a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight adhesive will stick to fabrics, plastics, metals and more to provide a permanent fix. It's great for repairing drysuits and may be applied while out in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for up to 12 hours prior using the repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. It includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair sample as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Gore-Tex Silfix repair adhesive & sealant and brush. To use, apply patch over clean, smooth surface of the damaged area with a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove the release paper from the patch surface and rub adhesive with moderate pressure (adhesive side down).

Surface preparation is vital for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or oils on shoes and boots can cause adhesion issues. For best results, apply Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing time up to two hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're out on the trail but do not have the time to make the full repair of your vulcaniser the patches that are self-adhesive will get you back in the saddle in no time. Apply the self-adhesive patch, then roll it on.

Use the tube-scuffer for roughening up the surface. This will aid the glue stick. Then spread a thin coating of glue over the patch and cover an area at least as large as the patch. Wait for reps-r-us to get tacky and then press the patch in firmly and hold it in place.

This kit contains two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape fabric repair patches. It also includes a 1/4 ounce Seam Grip urethane sealant and repair adhesive. Perfect for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, rainwear and backpacks.
