Self-Empting Robot Vacuums
The need emptying your robot vacuum on each cleaning cycle can be very annoying, especially for people with allergies. The dirt and debris gets kicked back into the air each time you empty your vacuum.
Self-emptying bases minimize your exposure to dust because the robot moves debris from its trash bin into a larger trash bin once it is full.
The Samsung Jet Bot+
Samsung's robot is the most advanced robot we've tested. It is a great filtration system along with a brilliant navigation system, as well as hand-free emptying of the dustbin. It comes with HEPA filtering and can trap in dust particles that are airborne to prevent allergies. The top of the device has a rotating brush bar with soft bristles that can be able to reach into tight corners. It also comes with self-cleaning extractors that break up hairs to prevent tangles.
The Jet Bot picked up a large amount of debris from my hardwood floors and carpets when I tried it. It missed a few small things in my dining room's corner and needed to go over them once more, but it was a great job overall. It was able to win my tests in comparison to the Roomba because its side brush was able to reach better along edges, and was more effective in cleaning small particles.
Samsung Jet Bot can be controlled via the SmartThings App and set to clean itself automatically at times that you prefer. It is also possible to schedule to clean certain areas or rooms, as well as adding virtual no-go zones (and physical ones if you prefer).
It uses LiDAR sensors that are similar to those used by self-driving cars to map and navigate and a camera at the front for intelligent object recognition. This feature allows it to avoid collisions with furniture and other items and find the most efficient route between rooms. It will also recognize any objects it believes to be "poop", and make an educated guess.
The SmartThings app lets you organize cleaning times easily as well as monitor the health of the robot, and keep an eye on what's happening on the map. The app can be set to alert you when the robot's bin gets full. It will then return to its dock to empty itself prior to continuing its cleaning. The 0.3L dust bin is easy to empty and is easily cleaned since it's sealed to ensure it's hygienic.
The iRobot Roomba 980
The Roomba 980 is iRobot's top of the top-of-the-line robot, and is also the most expensive. It's also a top performer, easily placing it in the same category as the top self-emptying robotic vacuums when it is able to clean. This is due to its HEPA filters and a powerful battery. It's also got a nifty little feature called CarpetBoost that automatically increases power when it senses it's on carpet, which is a nice feature.
Like the previous Roomba models, this model's frame is circular and it has a single window at the top that houses the camera. It's the camera that gives this model some real technological capabilities. It makes use of the camera in order to perform VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) by identifying distinctive characteristics in a room and then remembering them. It then compares this information to relative positioning gyro, IMU and wheel odometry information to create a map of the room it's in.
It's a very clever system, and it does pretty well on carpet, which is where the Roomba generally has a longer time than on hard surfaces. There are a few other amazing smart functions on the 980 too, like the ability to set up the weekly schedule for cleaning and to play a sound to aid in finding your robot. The front panel has a large "Clean" which will get your robot started. There are also indicators that show when it's charging and connected to Wi-Fi, as well as when the bin is full.
If you need to clean up a small mess the 980 has the ability to clean up spots that are quite basic, but it's not as thorough in covering area as the more sophisticated options out there. If you have some wires that are dangerous to your robot There's a virtual wall feature where you can put a barrier down that warns it not to approach it.
The software that comes with the 980 is also very user-friendly, and it'll give you an excellent visual overview of the way your robot is operating and what it's doing. You can also create an agenda and play with other settings such as bin capacity and reduced power mode.
The Roomba iRobot 960 from iRobot
iRobot is a brand that is synonymous with robot vacuums. The Roomba 960, priced at $700, falls somewhere in the middle. It's not as expensive as the flagship 980, but it has many of the same features. It comes with the ability to use a camera for navigation and a smartphone application with detailed cleaning maps. It also has a Virtual Wall, which creates an invisible barrier that the Roomba will not cross.
The 960 performed well during our tests, particularly on bare floors. It sucked up lots of food crumbs, cat litter and tracked dirt. It can also climb over obstacles such as stair runners, table legs and chair legs. It also sucked up pet fur, but it was unable to handle smaller pieces of debris, like baking soda.
One thing that separates the 960 from other Roomba models is that it has an additional dustbin for large debris, which cuts down on maintenance needs. The bin can be emptied by pressing a single button through the iRobot Home app or with voice commands from Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
The iRobot HOME App allows you to personalize every cleaning cycle. You can set the number passes, and choose from different options like edge clean, or a complete room sweep. It can also send an alert when it's time to empty the dirt compartment.
The 960 is easy to use and has buttons on top and control options within the iRobot Home app as well as through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It's also simple to maintain and comes with a display on top that shows the battery life and an automatic docking station that moves debris from the dirt compartment to the garbage bin when you're ready to empty it. The iRobot HOME app also shows you the exact location of each object it has gathered and provides how-to videos for a variety of maintenance tasks. The 960's battery life isn't stellar but it's enough to allow most people to run it during the day without worrying about having to recharge it before sleeping. The iRobot HOME App is available on both iOS and Android devices.
The Roomba 970 of iRobot.
The Roomba 970 is a robot vacuum cleaner that is compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. It uses the same advanced navigation as other recent iRobot vacuums and is able to detect stairs. self empty robot vacuum makes use of a centrally placed camera to scan the floor as it moves and is able to detect furniture walls, furniture and other obstacles. It can also establish boundaries for the robot using a virtual wall tool.
One of the major distinctions between this model and previous Roomba models is that it uses an lithium-ion battery, not the nickel metal hydride batteries used in earlier models. It's now able to run longer between charges and also has more endurance when cleaning. It's not as fast as the Shark AI Robot, but it's still pretty quick and can move around an area with ease.
The 970, as with the other models of the 960 series, can be controlled using the iRobot App and connects to the Wi-Fi network with any setup required. It has an incredibly small handle on the front that you can use to manually return it to its charger and a spot-cleaning feature that allows you to focus on a specific part of your home. The 960 series robots have the same three-stage cleaning procedure as other current iRobot models, which combines agitation with power-lifting suction to thoroughly clean your floor and remove dirt.
The 960 is great on carpets that are clean and can pick up a great deal of dust, hair, and other debris with its brushrolls and powerful suction. However, it struggles with high-pile carpet and tends to leave a little sand in its tunnel. It has a decent-sized dirt storage compartment and will notify you when it's full, either through the app or by a light that appears on top of the robot. It can be programmed to clean up on a regular basis, and we found it simple to set it up during our tests.
