V.Wildfires, especially those of large size, worsen air quality and alter the carbon cycle through combustion of large quantities of biomass and release of carbon into the atmosphere. The Black Dragon fire, which occurred in 1987 in the boreal forests of China is among the top five of such megafires ever recorded in the world. With over 30 years of accumulation of data and availability of new greenhouse gas emission accounting methods, carbon emissions from this megafire can now be estimated with improved precision and greater spatial resolution. To do this, we combined field and remote sensing data to map four burn severity classes and calculated combustion efficiency in terms of the biomass immediately consumed in the fire. Results of the study showed that 1.30 million hectares burned and 52% of that area burned with high severity. FRAX597 The emitted carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e), accounted for approximately 10% of total fossil fuel emissions from China in 1987, along with CO (2%-3% of annual anthropogenic CO emissions from China) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) contributing to the atmospheric pollutants. Our study provides an important basis for carbon emission estimation and understanding the impacts of megafires. V.Knowledge of soil water dynamics in the deep vadose zone provides valuable information on the temporal and spatial variability of groundwater recharge. However, semi-arid climate can complicate how the input of water, such as irrigation, can contribute to potential groundwater recharge. This study assessed the recharge rates and their timing under irrigated cropland from a semi-arid region of northern Iran. A deep drainage (10 m) experiment was performed and in situ soil water content was measured to analyze the soil water dynamics and model hydraulic parameters using HYSDRUS-1D. The best parameters selected from inverse parameter optimization were used to calibrate model and estimate the long-term (20-year) average groundwater recharge and the influence of the root zone, unsaturated zone and the time scale on the recharge processes. The simulated annual flux ranged from 24 mm to 268 mm (mean of 110 mm) at 2-m depth and ranged between 26 mm to 207 mm (mean of 95 mm) at the 10-m depth. High fluxes, observed between December and April, may be the result of greater precipitation combined with the irrigation return flow. The May-October period showed a gradual decrease in flux at the depth of 2 m. At the depth of 10 m, the flux showed some continuity (base flux) during the long-term recharge simulation. In total, 12.7% of the input water contributed to the recharge of the groundwater. The annual soil water fluxes were almost similar irrespective of depth below the root zone and the flux rates did not show any clear relation between the different components of the water budget at any depth. This approach improved our understanding of the recharge process in the deep vadose zone in a semiarid region and can help for the development of effective management of groundwater resources. As an important method of enriching, separating and removing nanoparticles, colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) need to be investigated for the fate and interfacial behaviors of particles during the process. It is beneficial to sufficiently interpreting the process performance and mechanisms. This study employed complementary tracking technologies to analyze the extensively-used engineered nanoparticles - TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) in effluent and floats of CGA process. Results denote that, at the optimum SDS relative dosage of 0.78 mg/mg TiO2, the particle number concentration was largely reduced by 2-4 orders of magnitude based on nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) whilst approximately 84.0% of TiO2-NPs were separated according to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). NTA shows the change of overall particle dispersion status in the water phase while ICP-MS provides the Ti-related separation effect. Particularly, the particle size variation for the scenario of overdosing CGAs was clearly observed by NTA. Micro-Raman, dynamic laser scattering and small angle laser light scattering exhibited advantages in obtaining the configuration and morphology of flocs. The large flocs with open structure were apt to form and be favorably separated at the appropriate CGA dosage. However, overdosing CGAs weakened the capture capacity of bubbles and gave rise to small and dense aggregates. This work, for the first time, shows the change of nanoparticles in water and solid phases using the important and novel nanoparticle collection method - CGA technology. It also provides a reference to other flotation-related technologies for studying the nanoparticle fate and the process performance. The Rodent Sperm Analysis method was devised some two decades ago to advance ecological assessment science for mammals, one of two groups of terrestrial receptors routinely evaluated at chemically contaminated sites. In part, this method recognizes that sufficient time has elapsed at sites, such that a need to anticipate or predict impacts to ecological receptors is an obsolete task. The method therefore, recommends evaluating the very receptors that occupy sites for evidence today of their displaying compromised reproduction, a toxicological endpoint of great concern within the regulatory community. Critically, Rodent Sperm Analysis is not a risk assessment method but rather a direct health status assessment method, a distinction that ecological risk assessors may fail to recognize or appreciate. Further, the method is not intended as a replacement for the conventional approach to ecological assessment, but rather a method to be run in tandem with it, where it may likely reveal that site mammals are commonly free of impacts and that conventional assessments are fully unnecessary. This Discussion paper is a cautious analytical review of ecological assessor perceptions about the vetted and recently ASTM International certified Rodent Sperm Analysis method. The review identifies potential impediments to the method gaining broader acceptance by professionals in the field, prominently among these, resistance to adopting a new ecological assessment paradigm that may be more helpful than the one presently in place.
