Eupatilin is known to possess anti-apoptotic, anti-oxidative, and antiinflammatory properties. We report here that eupatilin has a protective effect on the ethanol-induced injury in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups control, vehicle, silymarin, eupatilin 10 mg/kg, eupatilin 30 mg/kg, and eupatilin 100 mg/kg. Plasma levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were analyzed to determine the extent of liver damage. Total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) were analyzed to determine the level of liver steatosis. Malondialdehyde level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and glutathione (GSH) level were analyzed to determine the extent of oxidative stress. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β were quantified to verify the degree of inflammation. Based on our findings, chronic alcohol treatment significantly changed the serum indexes and liver indicators of the model rats, which were significantly improved by eupatilin treatment. Rats in the eupatilin-treatment group showed reduced levels of AST, ALT, TG, TC, TNF-α, and IL-1β, increased SOD activity and GSH levels, and improved overall physiology compared to the alcoholic liver disease model rats. H&E staining also verified the eupatilin-mediated improvement in liver injury. In conclusion, eupatilin inhibits alcohol-induced liver injury via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.Paeonol, quercetin, β-sitosterol, and gallic acid extracted from Moutan Cortex had been reported to possess anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities. This work aimed to illustrate the potential anti-oxidative mechanism of monomers in human liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells-induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and to evaluate whether the hepatoprotective effect of monomers was independence or synergy in mice stimulated by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Monomers protected against oxidative stress in HepG2 cells in a doseresponse manner by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species, increasing total antioxidant capacity, catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and activating the antioxidative pathway of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2/Kelchlike ECH-associated protein 1 (Nrf2/Keap1) signaling pathway. We found that the in vitro antioxidant capacities of paeonol and quercetin were better than those of β-sitosterol and gallic acid. Furthermore, paeonol apparently diminished the levels of alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase, augmented the contents of glutathione and SOD, promoted the expressions of Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1 proteins in mice stimulated by CCl4. In HepG2 cells, paeonol, quercetin, β-sitosterol, and gallic acid play a defensive role against H2O2-induced oxidative stress through activating Nrf2/Keap1 pathway, indicating that these monomers have anti-oxidative properties. Totally, paeonol and quercetin exerted anti-oxidative and hepatoprotective effects, which is independent rather than synergy. The ophthalmic artery usually arises from the supraclinoid portion of the internal carotid artery. Here, we present an extremely rare case of abnormal origin of the ophthalmic artery from the anterior cerebral artery associated with the paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm. As the embryology of the ophthalmic artery is complex, this case provides additional insight into the variation of the ophthalmic artery. We experienced a case of unruptured internal carotid artery aneurysm improved endocrinological function after the treatment. A 68-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of general fatigue, dizziness, and decreased visual acuity. Radiological examination revealed unruptured large aneurysm at the right anterior carotid artery compressing on the pituitary gland. We underwent right STA-MCA bypass and trapping of right internal carotid artery. Post-operative course was uneventful. Although visual function was not improved, her endocrinological function was improved 8 months after surgery by thrombosed and shrunken aneurysm. The mechanism of panhypopituitarism due to aneurysm has been suggested to involve mechanical compression on the pituitary gland, pituitary stalk, or hypophyseal artery. Although it was unclear about the improvement of endocrine function after the treatment of aneurysm, some cases could recover the hypopituitarism after enough follow-up period.Spontaneous retroclival subdural hematoma is rare among adults. To the best of our knowledge, only six cases have been reported. A 73-year-old man presented with sudden severe headache, diplopia, and dysarthria, with no history of trauma. Head CT revealed a retrociliary hematoma. selleckchem No obvious causes of bleeding, such as cerebral aneurysms or malformations, were detected. Conservative treatment was provided to the patient. MRI showed an intraventricular hemorrhage and a space between the basilar artery and hematoma three days after onset. The hematoma almost disappeared on day 7. MRI, particularly T2-weighted sagittal MRI, is effective in localizing hematomas and confirming intraventricular hemorrhages.A 33-year-old male presented with sudden onset of dysarthria. MRI showed a single round lesion containing hematomas in varying stages combined with venous malformation in the superior midline portion of the midbrain, indicating a midbrain cavernous angioma. Serial follow-up MRI revealed enlargement of the angioma concomitant with worsening of the dysarthria, ataxia, and intention tremor. Preoperative MRI suggested that the angioma consisted of a cystic hemorrhagic lesion with an 18-mm diameter without hydrocephalus. Since the angioma was located just beneath the floor of the midline portion of the third ventricle, we chose an anterior interhemispheric transcallosal transforaminal approach. After callosotomy, the foramen of Monro was widened by dissecting the choroidal fissure, enabling entry into the third ventricle. The lower part of the massa intermedia was cut;the median floor of the third ventricle was dissected and the angioma was removed. After the surgery, only a transient complication of seesaw nystagmus was observed, caused by damage to the interstitial nucleus of Cajal.
