The use of a branch first aortic arch replacement technique in ATAAD results in improved outcomes and is an approach applicable to all cardiac surgeons not only the aortic sub specialist. The marine invertebrates are one of the main leads to the derivation of anticancer compounds. The present investigation was to explore the anticancer effect of a potentially active polysaccharide fraction from marine clam Donax variabilis on human lung cancer cells (A549). A polysaccharide was purified from the whole tissue of D. variabilis by GFC and characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Subsequently, fraction 2.1 (F2.1) showed a significant inhibitory effect on A549 cells (p less then .001) with cellular, nuclear, and apoptotic morphological changes along with DNA damage. Although, F2.1 treatment exhibit the cell cycle arrest in S-phase through the downregulation of cell cycle regulators such as Cyclin A and cdk2 and regulate ROS-induced mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis in A549 cells by an increased level of proapoptotic molecules such as Bax, Cyt-c, Cleaved caspase-3 and 9, and decreased the level of Bcl-2. All data were statistically evaluated by one-way ANOVA and a post hoc analysis with Dunnett testing. Together, purified polysaccharide fraction from marine clam could be a new source of the natural anticancer agent against lung cancer. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Over the decades, a lot of anticancer drugs were designed from plant sources for therapies against various diseases. This was an attempt to isolate a novel anticancer agent from animal sources. Most of the marine mollusks are nutritionally rich and with some potent bioactive compounds. Donax variabilis is an edible marine clam, which was consumed as food among people where live in coastal regions. In the present investigation, the D. variabilis was chosen to isolate active polysaccharide fraction against lung cancer cells. Based on our findings, the purified polysaccharide fraction may be utilized as sources of natural bioactive agents in cancer prevention. To date, deep learning technologies have provided powerful decision support systems to radiologists in human medicine. The aims of this retrospective, exploratory study were to develop and describe an artificial intelligence able to screen thoracic radiographs for primary thoracic lesions in feline and canine patients. Three deep learning networks using three different pretraining strategies to predict 15 types of primary thoracic lesions were created (including tracheal collapse, left atrial enlargement, alveolar pattern, pneumothorax, and pulmonary mass). Upon completion of pretraining, the algorithms were provided with over 22 000 thoracic veterinary radiographs for specific training. All radiographs had a report created by a board-certified veterinary radiologist used as the gold standard. The performances of all three networks were compared to one another. An additional 120 radiographs were then evaluated by three types of observers the best performing network, veterinarians, and veterinarians aided by the network. The error rates for each of the observers was calculated as an overall and for the 15 labels and were compared using a McNemar's test. The overall error rate of the network was significantly better than the overall error rate of the veterinarians or the veterinarians aided by the network (10.7% vs 16.8% vs17.2%, P = .001). The network's error rate was significantly better to detect cardiac enlargement and for bronchial pattern. The current network only provides help in detecting various lesion types and does not provide a diagnosis. Based on its overall very good performance, this could be used as an aid to general practitioners while waiting for the radiologist's report.Mechanochromic polymers can be used as stress- and damage-detecting sensors in polymeric materials, given that mechanical stimuli can be visualized by color changes. Although many types of mechanochromic polymers have been reported so far, there are only few examples on their further functionalization based on multiple color changes (multicolor mechanochromism). Herein, preliminary results are reported on the use of multicolor mechanochromism to detect the duration of the mechanical stimulation by simply mixing white powders of two mechanochromic polystyrene samples that contain a different radical-type mechanochromophore at the midpoint of each polymer chain and thus exhibit different colors in response to mechanical stimuli. The mechanosensitivity can be tuned via the polymer length and shape, and a combination of these two types of mechanochromic polymers allows detecting the duration with multicolor mechanochromism, i.e., a color change from white to blue upon short exposure to grinding and a color change from white to gray upon longer exposure to grinding. Electron paramagnetic resonance and solid-state UV-vis measurements support the mechanism proposed for this multiple mechanochromism.Occlusion of the splenic vein, without occlusion of the portal vein, can lead to a localized, regional splenic hypertension, referred as sinistral or left-sided portal hypertension in the human radiology literature. In people, may cause gastrointestinal hemorrhages from the esophageal and gastric varices and the primary pathology usually includes pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasms. The final diagnosis of localized splenic hypertension necessitates accompanying normal liver functions and a patent extrahepatic portal vein. selleckchem Following obstruction, the resultant elevated splenic bed venous pressure causes formation of collateral routes, the extent of which depends upon the level and degree of obstruction. In this retrospective descriptive study, authors assessed the collateral pathways in dogs with isolated splenic vein occlusion and possible regional splenic vein hypertension. Out of the 46 patients initially recruited, 25 were excluded due to the presence of concomitant portal thrombosis and direct/indirect CT signs of portal hypertension. The remaining 21 dogs had clinicopathological tests suggesting normal liver function. The causes of obstruction identified included splenic pedicle torsion, tumoral splenic vein invasion, and splenic vein thrombosis. Four of 21 dogs with isolated splenic vein obstruction showed collateral pathways through the left gastroepiploic vein (4/4), left gastric vein (2/4), and splenogonadal vein (1/4). The diagnosis of isolated, regional splenic hypertension should be based on clinical, biochemical, and radiological evaluation. Computed tomography is an excellent tool to assess the collateral patterns and to determine the underlying cause.
