Hair loss is a quite common condition observed in both men and women. Pattern hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss that is thought to affect up to 80% of Caucasian men and up to 40% of Caucasian women by age of 70, and it can have quite devastating consequences on one's well-being, including lower self-esteem, depression and lower quality of life. To date there have only been 2 FDA approved medications, minoxidil and finasteride, but their effects are often unsatisfactory and temporary, in addition to having various adverse effects. Stem cell-based therapies have recently received lots of attention as potential novel treatments that focus on reactivating hair follicle stem cells and in this way enhance hair follicle growth, regeneration and development. Stem cell-based therapy approaches include stem cell transplant, stem cell-derived conditioned medium and stem cell-derived exosomes.
A combination of following key words was utilized for a PubMed search cell-btudies and a more detailed description of the latest clinical studies concerning stem cell-based therapies in hair loss.Purpose We present an original method for simulating realistic fetal neurosonography images specifically generating third-trimester pregnancy ultrasound images from second-trimester images. Our method was developed using unpaired data, as pairwise data were not available. We also report original insights on the general appearance differences between second- and third-trimester fetal head transventricular (TV) plane images. Approach We design a cycle-consistent adversarial network (Cycle-GAN) to simulate visually realistic third-trimester images from unpaired second- and third-trimester ultrasound images. Simulation realism is evaluated qualitatively by experienced sonographers who blindly graded real and simulated images. A quantitative evaluation is also performed whereby a validated deep-learning-based image recognition algorithm (ScanNav®) acts as the expert reference to allow hundreds of real and simulated images to be automatically analyzed and compared efficiently. Results Qualitative evaluation shows tter images using a modified Cycle-GAN, which may be useful for deep learning researchers with a restricted availability of third-trimester scans but with access to ample second trimester images. We also show convincing simulation improvements, both qualitatively and quantitatively, using the Cycle-GAN method compared with a conventional GAN. Finally, the use of a machine learning-based reference (in the case ScanNav®) for large-scale quantitative image analysis evaluation is also a first to our knowledge. We assessed the impact of a rapid molecular assay for influenza detection whether outsourced or performed onsite 24/7 in a University Hospital in Paris, France. Shorter median time-to-results (16.8 vs 2.3 hours, P less then .05) and an increased rate of adequate prescription of oseltamivir (76.6% vs 95.3%, P less then .05) were observed.
Intensive studies have failed to identify an etiologic agent in >50% cases of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Bacterial pneumonia follows aspiration of recognized bacterial pathogens (RBPs) such as
,
, and
after they have colonize the nasopharynx. We hypothesized that aspiration of normal respiratory flora (NRF) might also cause CAP.
We studied 120 patients hospitalized for CAP who provided a high-quality sputum specimen at, or soon after admission, using Gram stain, quantitative sputum culture, bacterial speciation by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight, and viral polymerase chain reaction. Thresholds for diagnosis of bacterial infection were ≥10
colony-forming units (cfu)/mL sputum for RBPs and ≥10
cfu for NRF.
Recognized bacterial pathogens were found in 68 of 120 (56.7%) patients; 14 (20.1%) of these had a coinfecting respiratory virus. Selleckchem Protosappanin B Normal respiratory flora were found in 31 (25.8%) patients; 10 (32.2%) had a coinfecting respiratory virus. Infection by ≥2 RBPs occurred in 10 cases and by NRF together with RBPs in 13 cases. Among NRF, organisms identified as
, which share many genetic features of
, predominated. A respiratory virus alone was found in 16 of 120 (13.3%) patients. Overall, an etiologic diagnosis was established in 95.8% of cases.
Normal respiratory flora, with or without viral coinfection, appear to have caused one quarter of cases of CAP and may have played a contributory role in an additional 10.8% of cases caused by RBPs. An etiology for CAP was identified in >95% of patients who provided a high-quality sputum at, or soon after, the time of admission.

Sleep is a fundamental element in the growth and development of adolescents. Sleep undergoes significant changes during adolescence due to physiological and environmental factors. It has been scientifically shown that the required sleep duration in adolescence is more than 8 hours per day. The aim of this study is to understand sleep patterns and sleep-wake cycle of Sharjah adolescents, and identify lifestyle habits affecting those sleep patterns, and to assess the prevalence of sleep problems.
The study was a cross-sectional survey of 519 high-school students, ages 14-21 years, in Sharjah city, United Arab Emirates. It was conducted using a self-filled questionnaire that included questions about demographic data, sleep and lifestyle habits and sleep problems of adolescents.
The mean age of our sample was 16.24. Most students (64.5%) were reported to sleep between 5 and 8 hours on school nights. The average time to go to bed on weekdays was 1125 PM. The average time to wake up on weekdays was 612 AM. Frequent arousals with difficulty getting back to sleep was the most encountered sleep problem among our sample.
A large proportion of adolescents in our study had insufficient sleep duration and suffer from some sleep disturbances. Smoking was found to be associated with sleep as non-smokers obtained longer sleep durations. There was no association between physical activity or usage of electrical devices and sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene by organizing awareness programs to improve sleep patterns among adolescent students.
