Plastic pollution, especially in marine environments, is a global problem that is currently inadequately managed. Solutions for marine plastic can occur through policy, behavior change and infrastructure improvements, but also through entrepreneurial ventures and technological innovations. Currently, information about these ventures and innovations is scattered and lacks coherence. This study presents the first comprehensive overview of entrepreneurial and SME led solutions for marine plastic by analyzing a database of 105 SMEs categorized into four functions prevention, collection, transformation and monitoring. We find that small businesses are successfully commercializing goods and services to reduce the damage of plastics on the marine environment through innovative business models, with a steep growth of startups founded between 2016 and 2019. However, efforts to manage marine plastic are still underdeveloped in many areas, including microplastic management and monitoring. Practitioners, policymakers and researchers can utilize the database to identify solutions, best practices, synergies and avenues for further research, such as quantifying the environmental impacts of this industry.
The utility of angiogenic biomarkers in a low resource outpatient setting is not well known. This study evaluates the clinical utility of angiogenic biomarkers, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) among patients at risk for preeclampsia in a low resource outpatient setting.

This was a prospective pilot study among high risk third trimester outpatients conducted in Bengaluru, India. Serum sFlt1/PlGF was measured between 28 and 37weeks. Patients with high risk ratio were managed with close observation, intermediate risk had serum redrawn in one week, and those with low risk ratio received routine care. Delivery decisions were made based on local protocols.

Maternal complication rate, development of preeclampsia with severe features, and latency to delivery was examined by sFlt1/PlGF ratio.

The study included 50 patients. Compared to women with a low risk ratio, women with a high-risk ratio were more likely to have preeclampsia with severe features (90.91% vs 8.00%, p<0.0001), a higher composite maternal complication rate (18.18% vs 0%, p=0.04) and deliver at earlier gestational ages (32.57 [30.43, 34.71] vs 37.43 [36.86, 38.14] weeks, p=0.0001).

The occupational painters have high risk of health effect due to exposure to high VOCs concentration. However, the toxic components in coating environment have not been carefully identified, and the health risks of VOCs exposure have not been sufficiently assessed. This study collected air samples from nine workshops of three major coating sectors in the Yangtze River Delta of China, namely cargo container coating, ship equipment coating, and furniture coating, to evaluate the non-cancer and cancer risk of toxic VOCs exposure to occupational painters under a normal working condition. The results show that the container coating had highest cancer risk (2.29 × 10-6-5.53 × 10-6) exceeding the safe limit of 1.0 × 10-6, while non-cancer risk of all workshops was lower than acceptable level of 1. Ethylbenzene and 1,2-dichloropropane should be targeted for priority removal during the container coating process in attempt to reduce adverse health effect on the occupational painters. This study helps better understand the health risk of VOCs exposure in coating workshops in China and provides information for policy-makers to formulate possible control of specific toxic compounds during coating process.We aimed to update the evidence-base of long-term noise exposures from road, rail, and aircraft traffic on both non-accidental and cardiovascular mortality. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The literature was searched using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE for the period between January 01, 2000 and October 05, 2020. 13 studies were selected for final review. The risk of bias and overall quality of evidence was evaluated using a pre-defined list of criteria. Risk estimates from each study were converted into per 10 dB higher of Lden for each traffic source. Inverse-Variance heterogeneity (I-Vhet) meta-analysis was used to pool these individual risk estimates, along with assessment of heterogeneity and publication bias. Sensitivity analyses include using random-effect model and leave-one-out meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses by study design and noise exposure assessment were conducted to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. For road traffic, the pooled relative risk (RR) per 10 dB higher Lden for mortality from non-accidental causes was 1.01 (95% CI 0.98, 1.05) (5 studies, I2 = 78%), CVD was 1.01 (95% CI 0.98, 1.05) (5 studies, I2 = 41%), ischemic heart disease (IHD) was 1.03 (95% CI 0.99, 1.08) (7 studies, I2 = 46%), and stroke was 1.05 (95% CI 0.97, 1.14) (5 studies, I2 = 62%). The overall quality of evidence for most meta-analyses was rated as very low to low, except for CVD or IHD mortality, for which the quality of evidence was rated as moderate. A possible threshold of 53 dB was visually suggested for CVD-related mortality from road traffic noise in the trend analysis. For aircraft noise, pooled estimates were based on fewer studies and varied by mortality outcomes. Evidence of long-term exposure to traffic noise on mortality remains weak except the association between road traffic noise and IHD mortality. High-quality longitudinal studies are required to better characterise mortality effects of traffic noise.
