Awan Magellan Besar merupakan galaksi terdekat ketiga dari bima sakti yang berada lebih dwkat dengan pusat bima sakti. Bermassa ± 10 miliar kali dari massa matahari. Merupakan galaksi terbesar ke-4 dalam grup lokal. Awan magellan besar terlihat seperti awan samar di langit malam ( bumi bagian selatan ). Terlihat 20x lebih besar dari bulan purnama ( jika dilihat dari bumi ).
• Awan Magellan Kecil ( AMK )
Diklasifikasikan sebagai galaksi katai tak beraturan dan memiliki massa ± 7 miliar kali massa matahari. Merupakan salah satu tetangga terdekat bima sakti dan benda terjauh yang bisa dilihat dengan mata telanjang. Dapat dilihat di bagian bumi selatan, ( bisa juga di bagian utara, namun hanya di lintang yang rendah ). Awan yang merupakan anggota grup lokal ini berpasangan dengan Awan Magellan Besar dengan letak 20 derajat di sebelah timurnya.
