In contrast, lipid signatures of adult and senescent flies were remarkably stable. Genetically obese flies displayed both quantitative and qualitative changes in TAG species composition, while PL signatures were almost unaltered compared to normal flies at all ages. Collectively, this suggests a tight control of membrane composition throughout lifetime largely uncoupled from storage lipid metabolism. Finally, we present first evidence for a characteristic lipid signature of moribund flies, likely generated by a rapid and selective storage lipid depletion close to death. Of note, the analytical power to monitor lipid species profiles combined with high sensitivity of this single fly lipidomics approach is universally applicable to address developmental or behavioral lipid signature modulations of importance for insect life.
The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is a controversial functional fibro-adipose layer that connects the mimic muscles to the skin and is involved in a variety of facial mimic expressions. The presence of muscle fibers within SMAS fibrous septa is hypothetical. The present study analyzed SMAS fibrous septa composition for the existence of striated muscle cells.
Histological serial sections of the sample borders (n=107) of 19 in sano-resected and diagnosed cutaneous tumors of the midfacial region were investigated. Immunohistochemical (actin and myosin) and hematoxylin and eosin staining were performed to detect striated muscle cells in SMAS fibrous septa.
A fibro-neuro-musculo-vascular functional unit within SMAS fibrous septa was demonstrated. SMAS striated muscle cells were morphologically independent from preparotideal and periorbital mimic muscles. Intraseptal blood vessels draining the superficial and deep SMAS vascular system were described.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expressions of CXCL5, CXCL8, and CXCL10 in periodontal cells and tissues in response to microbial signals and/or biomechanical forces.

Our data provide original evidence that biomechanical strain further increases the stimulatory actions of periodontal bacteria on the expressions of these chemokines. Music therapy (MT) is a nonpharmacologic therapy where licensed therapists provide active (e.g., singing, playing songs) or passive (e.g., listening) music-based interventions. Both active and passive MT are effective techniques for treating cancer-related symptoms. However, the influence of active vs. passive MT techniques on patient-reported perceptions and experiences of care have yet to be explored.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of semistructured interviews collected as part of a quality improvement study (n=20) with patients in the inpatient setting who had received active or passive MT within the past 24hours. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis.
Four themes emerged 1) Different articulations of benefit for recipients of active vs. passive MT; 2) patient choice as a form of empowerment; 3) changed perception of hospital experience; and 4) differing recommendations for futur specific MT for symptom control in hospital settings.
Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer report several symptoms at the end of life and may share palliative care needs. However, these disease groups have distinct health care use.
To compare the frequency and length of hospitalizations during the last month of life between patients with COPD and lung cancer, assessing the main characteristics associated with these outcomes.
Data were retrieved from the Portuguese Hospital Morbidity Database. Deceased patients in a public hospital from mainland Portugal (2010-2015), with COPD as the main diagnosis of the last hospitalization (n=2942) were sex and age matched (11) with patients with lung cancer. The association of patients' main diagnosis, and individual, hospital and area of residence characteristics, on frequency (>1) and length (>14days) of end-of-life hospitalizations were quantified through adjusted odds ratio (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
