When only distractor features are known, distractor templates allow irrelevant objects to be recognised and attention to be shifted away. This is particularly true in X-ray baggage search, a challenging real-world visual search task with implications for public safety, where targets may be unknown, difficult to predict and concealed by an adversary, but distractors are typically benign and easier to identify. In the present study, we draw on basic principles of distractor suppression and rejection to investigate a counterintuitive 'targetless' approach to training baggage search. In a simulated X-ray baggage search task, we observed significant benefits to target detection sensitivity (d') for targetless relative to target-based training, but no effects of performance-contingent rewards or the inclusion of superordinate semantic categories during training. The benefits of targetless search training were most apparent for stimuli involving less spatial overlap (occlusion), which likely represents the difficulty and greater individual variation involved in searching more visually complex images. Together, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of a counterintuitive targetless approach to training target detection in X-ray baggage search, based on basic principles of distractor suppression and rejection, with potential for use as a real-world training tool.Whether natural wetlands serve as the source or sink of greenhouse gases (GHGs) remains uncertain. Wetlands in China are diverse in type and abundant in quantity and differ greatly in spatial distribution, environmental conditions, and GHG fluxes. However, few studies focused on the differences in GHG emissions from different types of natural wetlands. 4-Phenylbutyric acid supplier Here, we adopted strict data collection criteria to create comprehensive and detailed datasets of fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the marsh, coastal, lake, and river wetlands in China, and relevant environmental variables. Our study synthesized 265 field observations on GHGs that lasted at least one year (covering both the growing season and non-growing season) from 109 studies, among which CO2 measurements using the opaque chamber method were not included for eliminating the influence of absence of photosynthesis on net CO2 accounting. We found that CH4 contributed the largest warming effect among the three types of GHGs, and coastal and river wetlands respectively acted as the mitigators and motivators of global warming among the four types of wetlands. Correlation and regression analyses suggested that geographic location, soil moisture and organic carbon, and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen jointly drove wetland GHG fluxes. The comprehensive global warming potential of Chinese natural wetlands was estimated as 427 Tg CO2-equivalents year-1, which might result from increased wetland drainage, reclamation, and external nutrient inputs. Selenium (Se) can alleviate the Cd-induced phytotoxicity, but the relevant underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Therefore, with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) chosen as the target plants in this study, the effects of selenite or selenate on Cd accumulation and subcellular distribution were investigated through greenhouse hydroponic experiments; and simultaneously, the effects of pre-Se treatment with selenite or selenate on Cd accumulation and root-to-shoot translocation in the studied plants were also included. Results showed the addition of Se slightly changed the Cd content in plant roots in a time-dependent manner; however, with the obvious decreasing trend on the Cd transfer factor (TF), its content in plant shoots was significantly reduced by selenite or selenate in a plant species-dependent manner. Overall, the work has demonstrated the possible effects of hydrodynamic cavitation on the quorum-sensing molecules of Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the first time.
