While an appropriate feed intake is crucial for the reproductive performance of sows, there is a lack of recommendations currently for feed allowance of Guangdong Small-ear Spotted gilts during gestation. The effects of 2 different feeding patterns during gestation on the reproductive performance of Guangdong Small-ear Spotted gilts were investigated by assigning 80 gilts to 2 feeding pattern groups with a randomized complete block design in accordance with initial body weight and back fat thickness, followed by treatment with an incremental feeding pattern (IFP) and a concaved feeding pattern, respectively, with no difference in total feed intake. The IFP group showed a significant decrease in the stillbirth rate (P less then 0.05) and an upward trend in piglet mean birth weight (P = 0.06). Furthermore, the IFP group exhibited an increase in the weights of stomach, supraspinatus tendon, triceps, and psoas minor in neonatal piglets (P less then 0.05). Overall, the results of the present investigation showed that IFP could significantly reduce the stillbirth rate of Guangdong Small-ear Spotted gilts and increase the muscle weight of progeny.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). Clinicians face various challenges in adjusting stimulation parameters and configurations in clinical DBS settings owing to inexperience, time constraints, and recent advances in DBS technology that have expanded the number of possible contact configurations. We aimed to assess the efficacy of a closed-loop algorithm (CLA) for the DBS-programming method using external motion sensor-based motor assessments in patients with PD.
In this randomized, double-blind, crossover study, we enrolled 12 patients who underwent eight-ring-contact DBS lead implantations bilaterally in the subthalamic nucleus. The DBS settings of the participants were programmed using a standard of care (SOC) and CLA method. The clinical effects of both programming methods were assessed in a randomized crossover fashion. The outcomes were evaluated using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Scale part III (UPDRS-III) and sensor-based scores for baseline (medication-off/stimulation-off) and both programming methods. The number of programming steps required for each programming method was also recorded.
The UPDRS-III scores and sensor-based scores were significantly improved by SOC and CLA settings compared to the baseline. No statistical difference was observed between SOC and CLA. The programming steps were significantly reduced in the CLA settings compared to those in the SOC. No serious adverse events were observed.
CLA can optimize DBS settings prospectively with similar therapeutic benefits as that of the SOC and reduce the number of programming steps. Automated optimization of DBS settings would reduce the burden of programming for both clinicians and patients.

While it is possible to decode semantic information across different languages from neuroimaging data, the approach's overall success remains to be tested and depends on a number of factors such as cross-language similarity, age of acquisition/proficiency levels, and depth of language processing. We expect to see continued progress in this domain, from a traditional focus on words and concrete concepts toward the use of naturalistic experimental tasks involving higher-level language processing (e.g., discourse processing). The approach can also be applied to understand how cross-modal, cross-cultural, and other nonlinguistic factors may influence neural representations of different languages. This article provides an overview of cross-language brain decoding with suggestions for future research directions.Epidemiological models are widely used to analyze the spread of diseases such as the global COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. However, all models are based on simplifying assumptions and often on sparse data. This limits the reliability of parameter estimates and predictions. In this manuscript, we demonstrate the relevance of these limitations and the pitfalls associated with the use of overly simplistic models. We considered the data for the early phase of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China, as an example, and perform parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis and model selection for a range of established epidemiological models. Amongst others, we employ Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling, parameter and prediction profile calculation algorithms. Our results show that parameter estimates and predictions obtained for several established models on the basis of reported case numbers can be subject to substantial uncertainty. We report a case of PLE caused by a regressed testicular germ cell tumor in an otherwise healthy young man, who presented with acute-onset confusion, memory impairment and anterograde amnesia. Prompt recognition of PLE is critical as it allows early treatment of both the primary tumor and PLE-related neurologic impairments, which can be severe and irreversible if treatment is delayed. Complete tumor treatment response offers the best chance for neurologic recovery in patients with PLE. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of PLE with radiologic-pathologic correlation in the setting of a regressed testicular germ cell tumor.
