Mauritia flexuosa palms inhabit wetland environments in the dry, seasonal Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) and produce mucilaginous secretions in the stem and petiole that have a medicinal value. The present study sought to characterize the chemical natures of those secretions and to describe the anatomical structures involved in their synthesis. Chemical analyzes of the secretions, anatomical, histochemical analyses, and electron microscopy studies were performed on the roots, stipes, petioles, and leaf blades. Stipe and petiole secretions are similar, and rich in cell wall polysaccharides and pectic compounds such as rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose, and glucose, which are hydrophilic largely due to their hydroxyl and carboxylate groups. Mucilaginous secretions accumulate in the lumens of vessel elements and sclerenchyma fibers of the root, stipe, petiole, and foliar veins; their synthesis involves cell wall loosening and the activities of dictyosomes. The outer faces of the cell walls of the parenchyma tissue in the mesophyll expand to form pockets that rupture and release pectocellulose substances into the intercellular spaces. The presence of mucilage in the xylem, extending from the roots to the leaf veins and continuous with the leaf apoplast, and sub-stomatal chambers suggest a strategy for plant water economy.Background Anthrax is a potential biological weapon and can be used in an air-borne or mail attack, such as in the attack in the United States in 2001. The aim of this study is to systematically review and evaluate the approaches to mathematical modelling of inhalational anthrax attack to support public health decision making and response. Methods A systematic review of inhalational anthrax attack models was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. The models were reviewed based on a set of defined criteria, including the inclusion of atmospheric dispersion component and capacity for real-time decision support. Results Of 13 mathematical modelling studies of human inhalational anthrax attacks, there were six studies that took atmospheric dispersion of anthrax spores into account. Further, only two modelling studies had potential utility for real-time decision support, and only one model was validated using real data. Conclusion The limited modelling studies available use widely varying methods, assumptions, and data. Estimation of attack size using different models may be quite different, and is likely to be under-estimated by models which do not consider weather conditions. Validation with available data is crucial and may improve models. Further, there is a need for both complex models that can provide accurate atmospheric dispersion modelling, as well as for simpler modelling tools that provide real-time decision support for epidemic response.Aims To evaluate the efficacy of insulating the limbs and thorax of cats with a combination of bubble wrap and an absorbent, plastic-lined pad in reducing heat loss during ovariohysterectomy. Methods A preliminary study was performed to compare heat loss of 1 L bags of Hartmann's solution heated to 38℃ which were either wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap and an absorbent pad (n=6) or were unwrapped (n = 6). Bags were allowed to cool in a temperature-controlled room and the temperature of the bags was measured every 10 minutes for 60 minutes. The clinical study, included 16 intact female cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy. The cats were premedicated with I/M morphine and either medetomidine or dexmedetomidine, and anaesthesia was induced with I/V propofol and maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Cats were randomly assigned to either the treatment group (n = 8) whose limbs and thorax wrapped with two layers of bubble wrap and an absorbent pad immediately after induction, or the control group (n=8) which 5.8) minutes p = 0.01). Conclusions Wrapping the limbs and thorax of cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy in a combination of bubble wrap and absorbent pads reduced heat loss, which in turn improved recovery time from general anaesthesia. Clinical relevance This inexpensive and practical method may reduce perioperative hypothermia, in cats undergoing abdominal surgery.Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a 5-fold increased stroke risk. While most patients with AF warrant anticoagulation, optimal treatment remains uncertain for patients with AF without cardiovascular comorbidities because the risk of stroke in this population has not been well-characterized. Methods and Results Participants (N=28 253; 55% women, mean age 64.6±9.4 years), from the REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) study (2003-present) were classified into 1 of 4 groups based on the presence or absence of AF and the presence or absence of cardiovascular comorbidities. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to compare the risk of stroke between groups. During 244 560 person-years of follow-up (median 8.7 years), 1206 strokes occurred. Compared with patients with neither AF nor cardiovascular comorbidities, we did not find an increased stroke risk (hazard ratio [HR], 1.23; 95% CI, 0.62-2.18 [P=0.511]) among participants with AF alone. Participants without AF but with cardiovascular comorbidities had both an elevated stroke risk (HR, 1.77; 95% CI, 1.48-2.18 [P less then 0.0001]) and an increased risk of cardioembolic stroke (HR, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.48-3.90 [P=0.0002]). Conclusions In this large cohort of participants with AF without cardiovascular comorbidities, we found that AF itself, without cardiovascular comorbidities, did not confer increased risk of stroke. Cardiovascular comorbidities, however, were associated with an increased risk of both stroke of any type and cardioembolic stroke, even in the absence of AF.Background Papillary thyroid cancers (PTCs) are common, usually indolent malignancies. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which are selectively expressed in a context-dependent manner, are expected to represent a new landscape to search for molecular discriminants. Transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) is a multifunctional cytokine that fosters epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and metastatic spreading. In PTCs, it triggers the expression of the metastatic marker Cadherin 6 (CDH6). Here, we investigated the TGFβ-dependent lncRNAs that may cooperate to potentiate PTC aggressiveness. Methods We used a genome-wide approach to map enhancer (ENH)-associated lncRNAs under TGFβ control. Linc00941 was selected and validated using functional in vitro assays. A combined approach using bioinformatic analyses of the thyroid cancer (THCA)-the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) dataset and RNA-seq analysis was used to identify the processes in which linc00941 was involved in and the genes under its regulation.
