Most female black flies in the genus Simulium are blood-sucking flies and they can cause various parasitic diseases in human and animal. A total of 94 species of black flies have been reported in Malaysia, however, their biting behavior and role as vector of infectious agents remain understudied. To fill in this knowledge gap, we attempted to survey adult black flies from field populations in Peninsular Malaysia. In a survey carried out in 2017 at Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu, three females were caught while attracted and landed on human skin. JZL184 mw Further morphological and molecular analyses showed that the specimens were identical to Simulium (Gomphostilbia) aziruni Takaoka, Hashim & Chen of the Simulium gombakense species-group. This is the first report on a black fly species attracted to human in Malaysia which serves as a steppingstone towards in-depth studies for black flies in this region.
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is the potential curative modality for poor-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML), relapse remains the main reason for transplant failure. Early-phase studies showed azacitidine is safe for post-transplant maintenance therapy in AML.
We performed a single institutional prospective cohort study to evaluate the benefit of azacitidine maintenance therapy following allogeneic HSCT in poor-risk AML. The main objective of this study is to generate a hypothesis aiming to optimize post-transplantation outcomes in poor-risk AML. Forty-nine adults with poor-risk AML who underwent allogeneic HSCT were evaluated in a nonrandomized prospective cohort fashion. Thirty-one participants received post-transplant azacitidine (32mg/m
) on Days 1-5 for a 28-day treatment cycle beginning approximately 40days after transplantation. The study was controlled using 18 matched individuals who were on a noninterventional surveillance protocol.

Existing literature on allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) is confounded by the inclusion of patients with secondary AML and t-MDS. We aim to report our 20-year experience of HSCT in t-AML.
We retrospectively reviewed patients with t-AML who underwent HSCT. Patients were analyzed for prior malignancy, therapy, time to diagnosis of t-AML, transplant details, relapse-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and predictors of outcomes.
In total, 68 patients (59.9% female; median age, 56.5years) underwent HSCT. Acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) occurred in 39 (57.4%) and 23 (33.8%) patients, respectively. Cumulative incidence of relapse, nonrelapse mortality, RFS, and OS at 2years were 17.9%, 34.5%, 47.6%, and 49.3%, respectively. Significant predictors of reduced OS were presence of 11q23 rearrangement (hazard ratio [HR], 3.24), using induction regimens other than FLAG-Ida or 7+3 (HR, 3.65), haploidentical donors (HR, 3.48), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 2 or higher (HR, 5.83), and using cyclosporine A-methotrexate as GVHD prophylaxis (HR, 2.41). A significant decrement in survival was seen with an increasing number of any of these prognostic factors.
Outcomes of t-AML are satisfactory after allo-HSCT. Patients with t-AML with good-risk karyotypes, good performance status, having HLA-matched donors, and receiving intensive induction regimens have better outcomes after HSCT.

AAA+ proteins have a range of functions, from DNA replication to protein degradation. Rvbs, also known as RUVBLs, are AAA+ ATPases with one NBD domain and were described from human to yeast as participants of the R2TP (Rvb1-Rvb2-Tah1-Pih1) complex. Although essential for the assembly of multiprotein complexes-containing DNA and RNA, the protozoa Rvb orthologs are less studied. For the first time, this work describes the Rvbs from Leishmania major, one of the causative agents of Tegumentar leishmaniasis in human. Recombinant LmRUVBL1 and LmRUVBL2 his-tagged proteins were successfully purified and investigated using biophysical tools. LmRUVBL1 was able to form a well-folded elongated hexamer in solution, while LmRUVBL2 formed a large aggregate. However, the co-expression of LmRUVBL1 and LmRUVBL2 assembled the proteins into an elongated heterodimer in solution. Thermo-stability and fluorescence experiments indicated that the LmRUVBL1/2 heterodimer had ATPase activity in vitro. This is an interesting result because hexameric LmRUVBL1 alone had low ATPase activity. Additionally, using independent SL-RNAseq libraries, it was possible to show that both proteins are expressed in all L. major life stages. Specific antibodies obtained against LmRUVBLs identified the proteins in promastigotes and metacyclics cell extracts. Together, the results here presented are the first step towards the characterization of Leishmania Rvbs, and may contribute to the development of possible strategies to intervene against leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease of great medical importance.

The objective of this study was to examine the association of frequency of eating meals prepared away from home with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.
This study included 35,084 adults aged 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 1999-2014, who reported their dietary habits including frequency of eating meals prepared away from home in a questionnaire during face-to-face household interviews.
All-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cancer mortality were ascertained by linkage to death records through December 31,2015.
Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios of mortality from all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality.
During 291,475 person-years of follow-up, 2,781 deaths occurred, including 511 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 638 death from cancer.
