Upvc Window Handles Replacement
It is fairly easy to change your upvc window handle. You'll require a few tools and a few steps. To ensure an efficient replacement, you should first identify the handle type and determine the spindle size.
There are two types of handles made from upvc: Cockspur and Espag handles. Espag handles come with a seven millimeter square spindles that engages the locking mechanism on the frame.
Espag handles
Espag handles are a popular option for timber and upvc frames. They are designed to work with espagnolette locking systems. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that extends out of the back and is then placed into the gearbox for a multipoint locking system within the window. They are available in a variety spindle sizes. This is because every type of window handle is fixed to a multipoint locking system that has a slightly different layout.
Typical specifications of espag window handles include a push-button for the 'locked' closed position as well as key-locking and non-locking for fire escapes (where is required). Some even reach Secure by Design standards, which will provide you with security. Typically, they are affixed to the sash with two screws that are 43mm apart.
There are several variations to the espag window handle, most notably the in-line versus Cranked design. In-line handles can turn both left and right, while those that are cranked are only operable in the direction of travel for the window (i.e. clockwise or anti-clockwise). They can be fixed to the window in any way but it is important that they are pointed in the same direction that the old cockspur handle did.
When selecting the replacement window handle, it is important to be thorough and determine the spindle's measurement. The spindle is the metal bar that protrudes from back of the door handle. It can be any length from 10mm to 55mm. The length is what's visible when the handle is in its original undamaged condition. You'll need to match this when purchasing a new handle as the spindle is the one that drives the lock inside the window.
Some manufacturers offer magnetic espag handles that remove the need to cut spindles into sizes. This may make it easier to fit the process as it is faster and easier to take out the old handle and put in a new one. You should still make sure to take the time to take measurements of the spindle to ensure that the handle will perform smoothly.
Cockspur handles
Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminium windows. They do not have an locking mechanism, however they are considered safe as the handle nose closes into a wedge-shaped block which is fitted to the window frame. ( hop over to this website of handle is not to be confused with timber frames which have a catch). Cockspur handles remain popular and come in different styles to fit any type of doors.
They are an economical and easy option. They can also be key-locked to comply with the requirements of insurance. There is also a choice of handle nose sizes to suit different frames. A lockable version is also available, which adds an additional level of security to the window. It is approved by Secured by Design.
These handle types are attached to the sash of the tilt-and-turn or casement side of the window by a spindle which runs through the baseplate. The handle is operated with the lever that is located on either side of the handle and the spindle of the handle engages with the wedge striker that is fitted to the window frame to secure it. Cockspur handle kits are usually available with left and right hand versions, and an array of nose heights to suit most frames.
The correct wedge block size is the key to a successful installation. This is simply a small block of plastic that is shaped as ramps. You can replace the existing handle with one that is slightly larger in size to ensure that the handle will close precisely across the gap of the window, sealing it against draughts. The fixing positions of these handles are standard and typically range between 38mm and 58mm wide. You should be able to locate the right replacement without much trouble.
Another aspect to take into consideration when selecting a new set of cockspur handles is the length of the spindle. This is the distance from the handle baseplate to the point at which the shaft of the handle extends through the sash and into the frame and it is important that this is precise so that the handles work smoothly.
Turn and tilt handles
These handles are designed specifically for tilt-and-turn windows and come in nonlocking, locking or tilt safe choices. These heavyweight handles offer a strong grip and detents are located at 90 degrees. Available in various finishes including black, white and gold. It is compatible with timber or PVCu tilt-and-turn windows.
These handles can be used to replace the cockspur made of upvc that was used on older windows that don't have locks. However, you should be aware that these are distinct from espag upvc handles since they're not locked and operate in a different manner.
The mechanism that 'turns before tilting' allows the window to tilt inwards, and then be dropped into a ventilated or hopper-style position to breathe fresh air. This type of handle, also known as DK or dry keep window handle, is typically used in older double glazed properties.
There are many things to keep in mind when you are replacing the tilt and turn window handle. It is important to first make sure that the handle you pick is compatible with your windows. This includes assessing the size of the spindle. The length of the spindle is the length of the steel rod that extends from the handle into the locking mechanism. The longer the spindle is more secure, the safer it will be.
The handle is usually attached to the frame or the base of your window using a screw situated above or below it according to the design of the window. The screws can be removed with a screwdriver and the handle can be removed. It is best to unbolt the handle first to make it easier to access both screw holes.
Once the handle is removed you will be able to see two more screws that need to be removed. This will reveal some decorative caps. The handles can then be removed by unscrewing these using the flat-head screwdriver. Once the handles have been moved to the windows, you can put them back in place by replacing the cap on the screw.
Take a measurement of the length of the spindle.
The spindle length of a window handle is important because it determines how the handle will open and close. It is important to measure the length of your handle's length and compare it with the spindle length of a new one. This will ensure your new handle will fit the window in the right way, and will be simple to open or close.
If you require a new handle or desire to improve your uPVC windows appearance, the handle type will have a significant impact on how the window opens and locks. There are various handles to choose from, including inline espagnolette and cranked. There are also tilt-turn handles designed to be used with a tilt-turn uPVC window that can be opened in both directions.
To replace the handle on a window, locate the screw caps holding it in place. They are usually placed between the handle and the floor and can be removed using a screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, you are able to remove the handle and spindle from the window frame.
You can then take the handle out of the window frame and replace it with a new one. Make sure the new handle is positioned in the same manner that the previous one was and that the spindle is aligned with the lock mechanism. Once the new handle is in place, it's time to put the screws back in and fix the handle. If you're missing screw caps you can replace them.
It may be necessary to change the handles on your uPVC window in the event that they break. The handle might break because of a powerful impact or the female part that the spindle goes into could be worn out. This could happen if someone in your home tries to force the handle during the time it is locked.
The best way to replace your uPVC window handle is to buy a top quality one that will last for an extended period of time. This will save you money in the long run. Additionally, it will give your house a more attractive and modern appearance.
