Isotopic gas analysis by means of mid-infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy aimed towards man blown out air flow.
Adaptable communication systems are of great interest as they provide dynamic front end to accommodate the tunable spectrum management in advanced wireless systems. Memristor (acronym of memory resistor) is an emerging technology part of resistive RAM (RRAM) that has good potential for application in reconfigurable RF devices. The potentiality of using resistive switches for frequency tuning of high frequency RF filters is successfully explored in this article for the first time. Tunable RF filter is designed with detailed simulation using Ansys HFSS, and then correlated with measured results from experiment. As a proof of concept, a prototype of the tunable RF filter is fabricated by using a graphene oxide (GO) integrated with a conventional microstrip open stub notch filter. The resistor switching ability of the device is exploited for the frequency tuning. The resonating length of the notch filter is varied by changing the resistance of the active GO material between 'HIGH' (OFF) and 'LOW' (ON) resistance states. The measured results demonstrate the great potential of using RRAM in tunable RF devices. It also proves the possibility of tuning RF devices without any localized surface mount device (SMD) element or complex realization technique. To call attention to the danger of extinction of the panda bear, the Lithuanian artist Ilja Klemencov created the artwork "They can disappear". The illustration is composed of black-and-white zigzagged lines, which form the famous panda logo of the World Wild Fund For Nature (WWF) when seen from a distance. If one is too close to the artwork, it is difficult to spot the bear, however, if one steps back or takes off one's glasses the panda suddenly appears. This led us to ask if the ability to see the panda is related to the visual acuity of the observer and if therefore, the panda illusion can be used to assess the spatial resolution of the eye. Here we present the results of the comparison between visual acuity determined using the Landolt C and that predicted from the panda illusion in 23 healthy volunteers with artificially reduced visual acuity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the panda illusion is based on a 2D pulse-width modulation, explain its technical history, and provide the equations required to create the illusion. Finally, we explain why the illusion indeed can be used to predict visual acuity and discuss the neural causes of its perception with best-corrected visual acuity.Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is caused by chronic compression of the spinal cord and is the most common cause of myelopathy in adults. No drug is currently available to mitigate CSM. Herein, we made a rat model of CSM by epidurally implanting an expanding water-absorbent polymer underneath the laminae compress the spinal cord. The CSM rats exhibited progressive motor impairments recapitulating human CSM. CSM rats had loss of spinal motor neurons, and increased lipid peroxidation in the spinal cord. Zonisamide (ZNS) is clinically used for epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. We previously reported that ZNS protected primary spinal motor neurons against oxidative stress. selleck inhibitor We thus examined the effects of ZNS on our rat CSM model. CSM rats with daily intragastric administration of 0.5% methylcellulose (n = 11) and ZNS (30 mg/kg/day) in 0.5% methylcellulose (n = 11). Oral administration of ZNS ameliorated the progression of motor impairments, spared the number of spinal motor neurons, and preserved myelination of the pyramidal tracts. In addition, ZNS increased gene expressions of cystine/glutamate exchange transporter (xCT) and metallothionein 2A in the spinal cord in CSM rats, and also in the primary astrocytes. ZNS increased the glutathione (GSH) level in the spinal motor neurons of CSM rats. ZNS potentially ameliorates loss of the spinal motor neurons and demyelination of the pyramidal tracts in patients with CSM.The goals of the European Water Framework Directive changed the perspective on rivers from human to ecosystem-based river management. After decades of channelizing and damming rivers, restoration projects are applied with more or less successful outcomes. The anthropogenic influence put on rivers can change their physical parameters and result in a different morphological type of river. Using the Ammer River as an example, a comparison between applied systems of corridor determination based on historical maps and data; calculation of regime width; and the change in parameters and river typology are pointed out. The results showed (a) a change in stream power and morphology (b) great difference between the historical and the predicted river type and (c) that regulated rivers can have a near-natural morphology. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.Autophagy is a homeostatic process with multiple functions in mammalian cells. Here, we show that mammalian Atg8 proteins (mAtg8s) and the autophagy regulator IRGM control TFEB, a transcriptional activator of the lysosomal system. IRGM directly interacted with TFEB and promoted the nuclear translocation of TFEB. An mAtg8 partner of IRGM, GABARAP, interacted with TFEB. Deletion of all mAtg8s or GABARAPs affected the global transcriptional response to starvation and downregulated subsets of TFEB targets. IRGM and GABARAPs countered the action of mTOR as a negative regulator of TFEB. This was suppressed by constitutively active RagB, an activator of mTOR. Infection of macrophages with the membrane-permeabilizing microbe Mycobacterium tuberculosis or infection of target cells by HIV elicited TFEB activation in an IRGM-dependent manner. Thus, IRGM and its interactors mAtg8s close a loop between the autophagosomal pathway and the control of lysosomal biogenesis by TFEB, thus ensuring coordinated activation of the two systems that eventually merge during autophagy.Melanoma cells can switch between a melanocytic and a mesenchymal-like state. Scattered evidence indicates that additional intermediate state(s) may exist. Here, to search for such states and decipher their underlying gene regulatory network (GRN), we studied 10 melanoma cultures using single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) as well as 26 additional cultures using bulk RNA-seq. Although each culture exhibited a unique transcriptome, we identified shared GRNs that underlie the extreme melanocytic and mesenchymal states and the intermediate state. This intermediate state is corroborated by a distinct chromatin landscape and is governed by the transcription factors SOX6, NFATC2, EGR3, ELF1 and ETV4. Single-cell migration assays confirmed the intermediate migratory phenotype of this state. Using time-series sampling of single cells after knockdown of SOX10, we unravelled the sequential and recurrent arrangement of GRNs during phenotype switching. Taken together, these analyses indicate that an intermediate state exists and is driven by a distinct and stable 'mixed' GRN rather than being a symbiotic heterogeneous mix of cells.
