To diagnose and treat these cancers, clinicians need accessing the gastrointestinal tract, for example, colon and small intestine, which are soft biological tubes. Soft balloon assisted locomotion is one of the promising methods for accessing bio-duct. It has been widely used in enteroscopy and other medical devices. However, the interaction between the balloon and the soft tube is seldom studied, such as the interaction pressure and the anchoring force. In this work, we present the first modeling of the interaction between soft balloon actuators and soft tubular environment. The free inflation model of soft balloon actuators was first presented. Then a constrained inflation model of the soft balloon in a soft tube was established. Finally, the anchoring force model between the soft balloon and the soft tube was developed. On average, the mean error of the predictions in these three models is 0.228 kPa (or 3.14%), 0.56 kPa (or 7.8%), and 0.22 N (or 14.7%), respectively. In the future, these models could be used for guiding balloon-actuator designs by minimizing the interaction pressure while maintaining sufficient anchoring force during the locomotion in soft tubes.Background Dexmedetomidine is an α2-adrenoreceptor agonist with utility in sedation and analgesia for the perioperative or intensive care patient. The literature regarding the safety of dexmedetomidine in lactating patients is very limited. Methods We present a case of a lactating patient who received dexmedetomidine bolus and infusion as part of her intraoperative sedation during an awake craniotomy. Breast milk samples were expressed by the patient twice intraoperatively and twice postoperatively. All samples collected were analyzed using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Results Dexmedetomidine concentrations in the breast milk were measured at various intervals and were 88 and 50 pg/mL intraoperatively, and 89 and 15 pg/mL postoperatively. Conclusion Levels of dexmedetomidine in breast milk were exceedingly low. Interruption of breastfeeding and/or discarding expressed breast milk may not be necessary after dexmedetomidine in breastfeeding mothers. Further investigation with a larger sample size is warranted to describe safety profile of dexmedetomidine in breastfeeding infants.Introduction There is widespread literature on the interaction between cannabis use and sleep, yet the mechanisms that underlie this relationship are not well understood. Several factors lead to inconsistencies in this relationship suggesting a nuanced interaction between cannabis and sleep. An important question that remains to be addressed is the temporal relationship between disrupted sleep and cannabis use. This literature review summarizes the existing literature on the association between disrupted sleep and cannabis toward the goal of addressing the question of the chronology of these reported effects. Materials and Methods We conducted a review of the literature using PubMed to summarize current knowledge on the association between cannabis use and sleep in humans. Results We identified 31 studies on the association of cannabis use and sleep. The findings from these studies were mixed. Cannabis was associated with a variety of impacts on sleep ranging from beneficial effects, such as reduced sleep-onset latency, to negative outcomes, such as reduced sleep duration and suppressed rapid eye movement oscillations. The chronology of the interaction of cannabis and sleep was unclear, although much of the current literature focus on factors that modulate how cannabis impairs sleep after initial use. Conclusion There was sufficient evidence to suggest that cannabis use alters circadian rhythms, and hence, negatively impacts sleep. The current literature is largely from studies utilizing self-report measures of sleep; thus, objective measures of sleep are needed.
