Furthermore, STMN1 knock-out mice displayed a lower number of erythroid and megakaryocytic progenitor cells and had delayed recovery of their blood counts after chemotherapy. These studies show an important role for STMN1 in normal erythro-megakaryopoietic development and suggests potential implications for disorders affecting these hematopoietic lineages.Previous research suggests that maternal prenatal psychological distress (PPD) is related to altered cortisol reactivity in the exposed child. There are indications for the sex differences in vulnerability for prenatal adversities that depend on the exposure and child outcome. Still, it is not known whether the association between maternal PPD and infant cortisol stress response is moderated by sex. In addition, the recovery phase of the cortisol stress response has not been given as much attention as reactivity. Our aim was to study the sex differences in the associations between self-reported maternal prenatal depressive-, anxiety- and pregnancy-related anxiety symptoms through gestational weeks 14, 24 and 34 and the saliva cortisol reactivity to and recovery from the acute stress among 10-week-old infants. The study population comprised of 363 mother-infant pairs from the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. We found evidence for sex-dependent associations between PPD exposure and infant cortisol response. A less steep recovery slope (-10 % per one SD increase in PPD [95 % CI = -18 to -2 %] and -8 % [-16 to 0 %] depending on the exposure) and a possibly less steep reactivity slope (-14 % [95 % CI = -25 to 0 %] and -10 % [-21 to 3 %]) were associated with higher PPD exposure in females. Of the PPD measures, the strongly intercorrelated, and thus combined, depressive and anxiety symptom score provided the most robust prediction of infant cortisol recovery. Our results demonstrate sexually dimorphic alterations in the functioning of the infant hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and especially in the functioning of the negative feedback loop of the axis after prenatal PPD exposure among healthy babies.Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood characterized by significant changes in global and regional brain tissue volumes. It is also a period of increasing vulnerability to psychiatric illness. The relationship between these patterns and increased levels of circulating sex steroids during adolescence remains unclear. The objective of the current study was to determine whether gonadectomy, prior to puberty, alters adolescent brain development in male rhesus macaques. Ninety-six structural MRI scans were acquired from 12 male rhesus macaques (8 time points per animal over a two-year period). Six animals underwent gonadectomy and 6 animals underwent a sham operation at 29 months of age. Mixed-effects models were used to determine whether gonadectomy altered developmental trajectories of global and regional brain tissue volumes. We observed a significant effect of gonadectomy on the developmental trajectory of prefrontal gray matter (GM), with intact males showing peak volumes around 3.5 years of age with a subsequent decline. In contrast, prefrontal GM volumes continued to increase in gonadectomized males until the end of the study. We did not observe a significant effect of gonadectomy on prefrontal white matter or on any other global or regional brain tissue volumes, though we cannot rule out that effects might be detected in a larger sample. Results suggest that the prefrontal cortex is more vulnerable to gonadectomy than other brain regions.Contamination of freshwater habitats with microplastic is threatening particularly filter-feeders within the aquatic community. Using Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex as models, the effects of food supply and temperature on the ingestion of polystyrene spheres (diameter 1 μm, concentration of 200 ng*ml-1) was analysed. The ingestion rates of microplastic beads were increased in conditions of low food and high temperatures, reflecting the complex regulation patterns of the water current generated by the animals' thoracic limbs. Maximal enrichment of 1160 times the concentration in the ambient medium was observed within one hour. Analyses of the impact of microplastic ingestion on physiological parameters used the carbohydrate concentration as an indicator for the animals' metabolic state. Exposure to the microplastic beads for three days in the presence or absence of Desmodesmus subspicatus did not affect the animals' glycogen reserves beyond the response to the prevailing food and temperature conditions. Projecting the insights from laboratory experiments to the habitat situation, increased burdens of microplastic particles can be expected in filtering zooplankton organisms in warm water and scarce supply of food, like the clear-water phase of lakes in the summer.
The Timed Up and Go test is a well-known clinical test for assessing of mobility and fall risk. It has been shown that the IMU which use an accelerometer and gyroscope are capable of analysing the quantitative parameters of the sit-to-stand transition.
Which signals obtained by the inertial sensors are suitable for continuous Timed Up & Go test sit-to-stand transition analysis?
In the study we included 29 older adult volunteers and 31 de-novo Parkinson disease (PD) patients. All subjects performed an instrumented extended TUG wearing a gyro-accelerometer. The sit-to-stand transition was detected from an angular velocity signal. The sit-to-stand signal pattern within the subject group was analyzed via an intra-class correlation between curves. Inter-subjects' variability was visualized using prediction bands.
The angular velocity about the pitch axis exhibited the best signal match across subjects in both groups (0.50 < ICC < 0.75). AZ-33 manufacturer When analysing acceleration, the acceleration along the antero-posterior axis showed moderate inter-subjects signal pattern match (0.50 < ICC < 0.75) in the reference group. The analysis of other signals revealed a poor signal pattern in both subject groups.
For optimal interpretation of the analysis of continuous curves, the signal pattern must be considered. Also, the inter-subject variability along this pattern can be informative and useful.
