Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) emerged in Cherry Valley duck flocks in China in 2015, and novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) was shown to be the etiological agent of SBDS. To date, it is not known whether SBDS-related NGPV isolates possess common molecular characteristics. In this study, three new NGPV strains (namely, SDHT16, SDJN19, and SDLC19) were isolated from diseased ducks showing typical signs of SBDS and successfully passaged in embryonated goose or Cherry Valley duck eggs. The complete genome sequences of these NGPV strains were 98.9%-99.7% identical to each other but showed slightly less similarity (95.2%-96.1% identity) to classical GPV strains. A total of 16 common amino acid substitutions were present in the VP1 proteins of six NGPV strains (SDHT16, SDJN19, SDLC19, QH, JS1, and SDLC01) compared with the classical Chinese GPV strains, nine of which were identical to those found in European GPV strain B. The non-structural protein Rep1 of the six NGPV strains had 12 common amino acid substitutions compared with the classical GPV strains. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Chinese NGPV strains clustered with the European SBDS-related NGPV strains, forming a separate branch that was distinct from the group formed by the classical GPV strains. The present study shows the common molecular characteristics of NGPV isolates and suggests that the Chinese NGPV isolates probably share a common ancestor with European SBDS-related NGPV strains.Fluoride enrichment of groundwater has been adjudged to be a global environmental challenge in the past decade as most humans depend on groundwater for their domestic needs. This study was conducted to investigate the ionic and fluoride concentrations in borehole water and its associated health risk potentials to residents of Makurdi town and its environs, Benue state, Nigeria. Multivariate statistical techniques were for the first time used to explain the mechanisms of fluoride occurrence in groundwater in the study area. An aggregate of sixty-three (63) groundwater samples were retrieved from boreholes in twenty-one (21) diverse points within the study area and assessed for its physico-chemical composition with emphasis on fluoride content and health risk potentials following standard field and laboratory procedures. It was observed that fluoride content in the sampled water exceeded the stipulated safe limit of 1.5 mg/L in about 33.33% of the total samples and ranged from 0.34 to 2.06 mg/L with an average in the groundwater. It is recommended that the findings of this study would serve as a basis for policy makers and regulatory bodies towards ameliorating the menace of groundwater contamination within the study area.The use of 2H2O in tank water to assess protein synthesis rates in fish is a relatively novel methodology that could allow for a better understanding of the effects of particular nutritional and environmental variables on rates of protein accretion. As such, this study involved an assessment and comparison of protein synthesis rates in the muscle of juvenile red drum fed a control diet (nutritionally complete) versus a valine (Val)-deficient diet. Six groups of 12 juvenile red drum, initially weighing ~ 4.5 g/fish, were stocked in six separate 38-L aquaria operating as a recirculating system. Fish were acclimatized to experimental conditions for 2 weeks while being fed the control diet. Just prior to initiating the protein synthesis assay, one aquarium of fish was fed the control diet while a second aquarium of fish was fed the Val-deficient diet. Immediately after consuming the experimental diets, each group of fish was moved to an independent aquarium containing 2H2O, and the fractional synthetic rate (FSR) of protein synthesis was obtained at 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after feeding by collecting two fish per treatment at each time point. This protein synthesis assay procedure was performed in three separate sessions, and considered as replicates over time (n = 3) for fish fed the control or Val-deficient diets immediately before initiating the session. Results indicated that a one-time feeding of a diet deficient in Val significantly reduced protein synthesis rates in the muscle of red drum. In addition, a significant effect of time after feeding was found, where observed FSR values peaked at 12 h after feeding and decreased as time progressed. In conclusion, deuterium methodologies were applicable to red drum, and this approach had the sensitivity to assess differences in protein synthesis rates when dietary perturbations were introduced.Many crop species are cultivated to produce seeds and/or fruits and therefore need reproductive success to occur. Previous studies proved that high temperature on mature pollen at anther dehiscence reduce viability and germinability therefore decreasing crop productivity. We hypothesized that high temperature might affect pollen functionality even if the heat treatment is exerted only during the microsporogenesis. Experimental data on Solanum lycopersicum 'Micro-Tom' confirmed our hypothesis. Microsporogenesis successfully occurred at both high (30 °C) and optimal (22 °C) temperature. After the anthesis, viability and germinability of the pollen developed at optimal temperature gradually decreased and the reduction was slightly higher when pollen was incubated at 30 °C. Conversely, temperature effect was eagerly enhanced in pollen developed at high temperature. In this case, a drastic reduction of viability and a drop-off to zero of germinability occurred not only when pollen was incubated at 30 °C but also at 22 °C. Further ontogenetic analyses disclosed that high temperature significantly speeded-up the microsporogenesis and the early microgametogenesis (from vacuolated stage to bi-cellular pollen); therefore, gametophytes result already senescent at flower anthesis. Our work contributes to unravel the effects of heat stress on pollen revealing that high temperature conditions during microsporogenesis prime a fatal shortening of the male gametophyte lifespan.This paper proposes a mathematical model for tilapia lake virus (TiLV) transmission in wild and farmed tilapias within freshwater.
