The relationship between obesity and lymphedema has important implications for public health. Recent Advances Extreme obesity can cause lower extremity lymphedema, termed "obesity-induced lymphedema (OIL)." OIL is a form of secondary lymphedema that may occur once an individual's body mass index (BMI) exceeds 40. The risk of lymphatic dysfunction increases with elevated BMI and is almost universal once BMI exceeds 60. Patients with OIL also may develop areas of massive localized lymphedema (MLL). Critical Issues Individuals with OIL are in an unfavorable cycle of weight gain and lymphatic injury. As BMI increases lymphedema worsens, ambulation becomes more difficult, and BMI further rises. The fundamental treatment for OIL is weight loss. Resection of areas of MLL and lower extremity volume reduction are performed when the BMI is lowered to less then 40 to reduce complications and recurrence. Future Directions The mechanisms by which obesity causes lymphedema are still being elucidated. Although lymphatic function can improve following weight loss, it is unclear whether lymphedema may be completely reversed.In this work, an effective and simple method is proposed for the simultaneous determination of cadmium, lead and copper in chocolate samples by Square Wave Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (SWASV). An ultrasonic bath was used for the extraction of cadmium, lead and copper from fourteen chocolate samples using HNO3 solution (7 mol L-1). The electrochemical system consisted of a cell with three electrodes and HCl solution (10 mmol L-1) as the supporting electrolyte. An efficient extraction of the metals (~100%) was attained after 1 h of ultrasonic pre-treatment. Quantitative analysis was carried out by the standard addition method. Good linearity, precision and accuracy were obtained in the range of concentrations examined. The accuracy was evaluated by means of a reference sample of spiked skim milk powder (BCR 151) to prove the reliability of the method. Detection limits (LOD) of 0.089, 0.059 and 0.018 µg g-1 were found for cadmium, copper and lead, respectively, in the chocolate samples. Concentrations in chocolate samples were 4.30-138 µg g-1 for Cu and 0.83-27.9 µg g-1 for Pb, with no significant Cd. The simultaneous determination brings advantages to other methods already reported for chocolate analysis and the samples preparation proposed avoids the traditional sample mineralization step. Controllers with and without internal simulators were tested and compared. The proposed controller architecture was shown to outperform the regular controller architecture. However, the longer an internal simulator was executed, the more inaccurate it became. Thus, the performance of controllers with internal simulators reduced over time unless their internal simulator was periodically corrected.We introduce the framework of reality-assisted evolution to summarize a growing trend towards combining model-based and model-free approaches to improve the design of physically embodied soft robots. In silico, data-driven models build, adapt, and improve representations of the target system using real-world experimental data. By simulating huge numbers of virtual robots using these data-driven models, optimization algorithms can illuminate multiple design candidates for transference to the real world. In reality, large-scale physical experimentation facilitates the fabrication, testing, and analysis of multiple candidate designs. Automated assembly and reconfigurable modular systems enable significantly higher numbers of real-world design evaluations than previously possible. Large volumes of ground-truth data gathered via physical experimentation can be returned to the virtual environment to improve data-driven models and guide optimization. Grounding the design process in physical experimentation ensures that the complexity of virtual robot designs does not outpace the model limitations or available fabrication technologies. We outline key developments in the design of physically embodied soft robots in the framework of reality-assisted evolution.
