A hybrid arc-wire welding method based on the variable polarity plasma arc (VPPA) and variable polarity pulse metal inert-gas (VP-PMIG) was proposed for manufacturing aluminum alloys. This paper aims to clarify the decoupling control process of heat and mass transfer in the hybrid welding process. To understand the arc physics and analyze the mass transfer behavior, the hybrid arc shape and droplet cross-sectional area with different parameters were obtained by high speed video photography. Further, the melting area of the base metal was analyzed by macro-metallography of the weld bead cross-section to study the heat transfer. It is found that the hybrid arc shape changes with time. The VPPA main arc is deflected to one side by the VP-PMIG, making the temperature distribution asymmetric, and during the VP-PMIG pulse necking occurs. The cross-sectional area of the droplet is more obviously affected by the VP-PMIG current than the VPPA current. Meanwhile, the VPPA current dominates the melting area of the base metal. Therefore, we conclude that heat transfer to the base metal is from the VPPA, while droplet transfer is mainly controlled by the VP-PMIG arc. These conclusions are confirmed by analyzing the decoupling degree of heat and mass transfer of the base metal by the VPPA and VP-PMIG arc.In this paper, we investigated the effect of strong electric fields on material responses and the Bloch oscillation resonance in high field conductivities. For this purpose, a high-order accurate explicit modal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver is employed for solving the quantum Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) in the context of electron transport at nanoscales under strongly out-of-equilibrium conditions. Here, we study the transient behavior and the convergence of a steady-state response to an external oscillating electric field switched on at time zero. We first benchmark our numerical results with known analytic steady-state responses at low fields. The computational results show that the present DG scheme is in excellent agreement with analytic solutions over the whole range of parameters and to an extremely high precision, allowing us to achieve good agreement even for the fifth-order response at low fields. We then extend the method to strong electric fields and show how the responses are deviated from the low-field ones and the transition to a dampened Bloch oscillation regime. Most importantly, we report the observation of a new regime induced by the resonance between the standard low-field response and Bloch oscillations. This study aimed to investigate the impact of sarcopenia and body composition on survival outcomes in Korean patients with advanced-stage high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). We retrospectively identified patients diagnosed with and treated for International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III-IV HGSOC. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured using pre-treatment computed tomography scans at the third lumbar vertebra. Sarcopenia was defined as SMI less then 39.0 cm2/m2. Patients' clinicopathologic characteristics and survival outcomes were compared according to sarcopenia presence. For subgroup analysis, we also measured the total fat area from the same image. learn more In total, 76 and 103 patients were assigned to the sarcopenia and control groups, respectively. Comorbidities, stage, serum CA-125 levels, and size of residual tumor after surgery were similar between both groups. After a median follow up of 42.7 months, both groups showed similar progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). In subgroup analysis confined to the sarcopenia group, patients with high fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR; ≥2.1, n = 38) showed significantly worse OS than those with low FMR ( less then 2.1, n = 38) (5-year survival rate, 44.7% vs. 80.0%; p = 0.046), whereas PFS was not different (p = 0.365). Multivariate analyses identified high FMR as an independent poor prognostic factor for OS in this group (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.377; 95% confidence interval, 1.1709.752; p = 0.024). In conclusion, sarcopenia did not influence recurrence rates and survival in Korean patients with advanced-stage HGSOC. However, among the patients with sarcopenia, high FMR was associated with decreased OS.Obesity is associated with a wide range of chronic diseases, including cancer. It has been noted that the integration of metabolic mechanisms in obese patients may predispose them to suffer from cancer incidence and its progression. Thus, a better understanding of metabolic alterations in obesity, along with the development of feasible therapeutic approaches for intervention, are theoretically relevant to the prevention and treatment of cancer malignancy. Using a syngeneic tumor model involving Lewis Lung Carcinoma (LLC) cells and C57BL/6 mice fed with a high fat diet, obesity was found to be associated with dysregulated glucose and glutamine metabolism, inflammation, along with platelet activation and the promotion of tumor growth. Tumor-bearing lowered glucose levels while moderately increasing inflammation, platelet activation, and glutamine levels. The antiplatelet drug aspirin, mitigated tumor growth in obese mice, paralleled by a decrease in systemic glucose, insulin, inflammation, platelet activation, glutamine and tumor expression of cell proliferation, aerobic glycolysis, glutaminolysis, platelets, and leukocyte molecules. The anti- and pro-cell proliferation, aerobic glycolysis, and glutaminolysis effects of aspirin and glutamine were further demonstrated in a LLC cell study. Although there remains limitations to our experiments, glucose and glutamine metabolism are proposed targets for the anticancer effects of aspirin. The objective of this study was to assess the relative abundance of bacteria microflora in different segments of the gastrointestinal tract (duodenum, jejunum, ilium, and cecum) of indigenous (local Omani) and commercial (Cobb 500) chicken strains. Birds were raised under an intensive management system fed a nonmedicated corn-soybean meal diet from Day 0-35 days of age. Using 16S rDNA-based analysis the study showed that in both breeds of birds Bacilli were the most abundant class of bacteria in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Local Omani chickens had significantly higher numbers of Clostridia at most time periods. Actinobacteria were found in higher numbers and reached 54.9% of the bacteria in the jejunum at Day 35 in Cobb 500 versus only 5.42% in the Omani chickens. The bacterial microbiota relative abundance differed significantly (p less then 0.05) across different intestinal segments of the two strains, suggesting that each region developed its own bacterial community and the relative abundances of these were quite different.
