Motion sensitive MR imaging techniques allow for the non-invasive evaluation of biological tissues by using different excitation schemes, including physiological/intrinsic motions caused by cardiac pulsation or respiration, and vibrations caused by an external actuator. The mechanical biomarkers extracted through these imaging techniques have been shown to hold diagnostic value for various neurological disorders and conditions. Amplified MRI (aMRI), a cardiac gated imaging technique, can help track and quantify low frequency intrinsic motion of the brain. As for high frequency actuation, the mechanical response of brain tissue can be measured by applying external high frequency actuation in combination with a motion sensitive MR imaging sequence called Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE). Due to the frequency-dependent behavior of brain mechanics, there is a need to develop brain phantom models that can mimic the broadband mechanical response of the brain in order to validate motion-sensitive MR imaging tecd sub-voxel motion, validated by varying power levels of pneumatic actuation (40%-80% power) under MR, and through video analysis outside the MRI scanner room. While this investigation used a homogeneous brain-mimicking phantom, our setup can be used to study the mechanics of non-homogeneous phantom configurations with bio-interfaces in the future.
Experiences with racism predict healthcare system distrust among people of color, but Black and Latino young men who have sex with men (YMSM) also experience overlapping forms of stigma associated with their sexual identities and behaviors (i.e., homonegativity and internalized homonegativity). These forms of minority stress may drive healthcare system distrust among Black and Latino YMSM but have received far less attention.
To examine the associations of racism, homonegativity, and internalized homonegativity with healthcare system distrust among a community sample of Black and Latino YMSM.
Data came from waves 2-4 (years 2017-2018) of the Healthy Young Men's study, a longitudinal cohort study of Black and Latino YMSM living in Los Angeles County. Data across waves (n=424, n
=1272) were combined and analyzed using a fixed effects approach and adjusting for repeated measures across participants. A series of regression models that added sets of covariates (demographics, syndemic indicators, and health-related factors) were tested to examine associations of racism, homonegativity, and internalized homonegativity with healthcare system distrust.
Adjusting for demographics and syndemic indicators, racism, but not homonegativity or internalized homonegativity, was associated with healthcare system distrust. Adjustment for health-related factors had little impact on results.
Among Black and Latino YMSM, greater exposure to racism is associated with greater healthcare system distrust. Efforts to strengthen healthcare system trust should explicitly target the institutional policies that disproportionately harm people of color.

Efforts to strengthen healthcare system trust should explicitly target the institutional policies that disproportionately harm people of color.This paper examines the interrelationship between suicide, health, socioeconomic, and psychosocial factors in contributing to suicide in older adults in rural Australia. Drawing on a coronial dataset of suicide cases and a mixed methods sociological autopsy approach, our study integrated a quantitative analysis of 792 suicide cases with a qualitative analysis of medico-legal reports from 30 cases. The sociological autopsy provided novel insights into the entanglement of policy and service provision at the state-level with individual end-of-life decisions. Particular attention is drawn to age and gendered dimensions of suicide, especially in relation to health and social issues. The study showed a continuity between suicide and the patterning of an individual's life course, including experiences and consequences of inequality and marginality; a desire to meet culturally-normative ideals of autonomy; and a fragmented, under-funded, and intimidating social care system that offered limited options.
Elevated levels of inflammatory marker and a lack of social connectedness are two prominent risk factors for developing dementia and depression. Horticultural therapy (HT) has been shown to improve social connectedness and inflammatory markers. However, the underpinning mechanisms of HT remained unknown. Within this study, we hypothesized that improved social connectedness mediates the effects of HT on IL-6 levels.
The present study is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial investigating the bio-psycho-social effects of HT. Social connectedness was operationalized as positive relationships with others (PRWO), a sub-scale of the Ryff's scale of psychological well-being. IL-6 was quantified using a commercial ELISA kit. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 3-month and 6-month post-intervention. Mediation analyses with bootstrapping were run to investigate our primary hypothesis. All analyses were controlled for covariates.
We recruited 59 participants (78% women; 67.10±4.31 years). 29 participants partook in HT and 30 participants were included in the waitlist control group. At baseline, social connectedness was significantly correlated with IL-6 levels (β=-0.12, 95% CI=-0.21 to -0.03, p=0.008). selleck inhibitor Furthermore, social connectedness at 3-month significantly mediated the effects of HT on IL-6 levels at 6-month (β=0.32, 95% CI=0.09 to 0.54, p=0.005; β=-0.25, 95% CI=-0.45 to -0.05, p=0.016).
These findings highlight the critical roles of social connectedness as a social determinant of health in eliciting HT's biological effects. When administering HT, interventionalists should consider social connectedness as a modifiable factor for ameliorating increased inflammation in older adults.
