A two-group pretest/posttest, quasi-experimental design was conducted in a convenience sample (N = 37) of African-American women. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group by church affiliation. The six-week intervention consisted of teaching and roundtable discussions, and email reminders to be physically active. There were significant differences (p less then .05) in the level of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and friend social support. There were no significant differences in knowledge of physical activity guidelines, beliefs, and family social support. These pilot study results suggested that multiple factors are associated with physical activity engagement in African-American women.

Two hundred eleven participants aged 60 years or older participated in this observational study. After translation and transcultural adaptation of the JHFRAT-Sp, the internal consistency, criterion validity and construct validity were calculated using the Falls Efficacy Scale International, Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ), Health Questionnaire EuroQol (5Dimensions and VAS), Short Form-12v2 and Health Assessment Questionnaire.

The internal consistency was 0.986. The test-retest analysis ranged from 0.971 to 0.983. The error measures presented values in MDC90 and SEM of 0.602 and 1.404%, respectively. The chi-Square value was 120.662 (
 < 0.001). The extraction method by principal components showed a solution of four factors. Regarding the criterion validity, the correlation value ranged from

To develop preservation alternatives, the effect and interaction of a modified atmosphere packaging and an edible coating based on guar gum were determined on the shelf life and quality properties of blackberry cv. Three types of packaging were evaluated (1) perforated polyethylene terephthalate clamshells, (2) sealed polyethylene terephthalate clamshells, and (3) sealed polyethylene terephthalate clamshells with a polylactic acid film on top. In turn, two types of coating were evaluated coatings of guar gum solutions at (1) 0.3% and (2) 0.4% in water. During storage, an index of deterioration and different quality properties were evaluated. In the polyethylene terephthalate packages with polylactic acid, an equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging was formed. Weight loss was much lower for the sealed polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate + polylactic acid ( less then 2%) compared to fruits in perforated clamshells, with no significant differences between these two types of packaging. It was possible to observe the treatment with an edible coating of 0.3% gum guar and perforated clamshells (guar gum 0.3/N) presented the lowest deterioration rate and preserve the fruit longer time (13 days) although with a high weight loss (23.23%) while the treatment with polyethylene terephthalate and polylactic acid film + edible coating of gum guar (guar gum 03/polylactic acid) kept the samples during 12 days with a lower weight loss (1.75%). This latter combination of equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging with a biodegradable film and the guar gum edible coating can be an interesting treatment from a commercial point of view.The use of barbed sutures in tendon repair and reconstruction is advantageous because it allows for a knotless suturing technique. In this biomechanical study, we compared barbed sutures with conventional sutures in tendon transfers using the Pulvertaft weave technique in a human cadaveric model. Thirty human cadaveric finger flexor tendons were transected and divided into three groups of ten tendons, which were then reconstructed by the Pulvertaft weave technique using 3-0 Prolene (Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, NJ, USA), 3-0 Ethilon (Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, NJ, USA) or 3-0 V-Loc (Covidien Deutschland GmbH, Neustadt, Germany) sutures. Biomechanical testing showed that repairs in the V-Loc group had significantly greater ultimate tensile strength and stiffness than conventional sutures. The time taken to complete the weave and the length of sutures used were also the least in the V-Loc group. Our study has shown that the barbed suture has a better biomechanical performance than conventional suture types when used in the Pulvertaft weave technique.
