In addition, its aetiologies are heterogeneous, and the outcome depends on the underlying cause. In trauma care, changes in diagnostics, management and treatment may influence the outcome of posttraumatic ARDS over time, which are attributable to geographic distribution, relate to the definition used and depend on the injury severity. METHODS We selected studies by searching PubMed using the MeSH terms "acute respiratory distress syndrome", "mortality" and "trauma" and all their combinations. Studies that reported mortality rates for polytrauma patients with ARDS were included. We excluded studies with selected population collectives (e.g. burn patients, isolated thoracic trauma and paediatric trauma) and non-trauma studies. Studies were stratified according to the recruitment year of patients into Decade 1 (prior 1990), Decade 2(1990-1999), Decade 3 (2000-2009) and Decade 4 (later 2009); geographic location ≤ 25 points, 22.6%, ISS > 25 points, 22.6%). CONCLUSION In this systematic review, there was no change in the mortality rate over the last four decades, no geographical difference within Western societies, no dependence on the ARDS definition used and no association with injury severity, respectively.BACKGROUND This study evaluated the short- and long-term outcomes of synchronous resection of liver metastases (LM) from small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (SB-NET). METHODS A retrospective review of patients undergoing resection for LMs from SB-NETs from January 1997 and December 2018 was performed. RESULTS There were 44 patients with synchronous SB-NET and LMs. Perioperative and 90-day mortality values were zero, and the morbidity rate was 27%. The median overall survival (OS) was 128.4 months (CI 95% 74.0-161.5 months) with 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates of 100%, 83%, 79%, and 60%, respectively. Not achieving surgical treatment for LM was the unique independent factor for survival (HR 6.50; CI 95% 1.54-27.28; p = 0.01) in patients with unresected LMs having OS and 10-year survival rates (42 months, 33%) versus patients undergoing liver resection (152 months, 66%)(p = 0.0008). The recurrence rate was 81.8% and associated with longer OS and 5-year survival rates when limited to the liver [223 months (61%) vs 94 months (87%)]. CONCLUSIONS Simultaneous resection of SB-NETs with synchronous LMs was safe and associated with considerable long-term survival even in the presence of bilobar disease. However, recurrence after resection was common (81%) but associated with longer survival rates when limited to the liver.Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) is a marine bacterium that opportunistically caused foodborne gastroenteritis in human and some diseases in marine animals. The isolated strain of V. parahaemolyticus WS001 from Samut Sakhon, Thailand has a presence of ldh (~ 450 bp) toxA (~ 333 bp) and toxB (~ 1269 bp) genes which showed pathogenicity in shrimp. This strain is suspected as low pathogenicity in human due to the lack of tdh and trh genes for encoding thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and TDH-related hemolysin (TRH), respectively. The shrimp pathogenic strain was tested and revealed the multi-antibiotic resistances but was susceptible to norfloxacin (10 μg/ml). Citrus peel extracts were examined because they are rich in bioactive compounds such as saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, and alkaloids that are effective in anti-VP activities. The ethanolic peel extracts of Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle and Citrus hystrix DC. were found to be more anti-VP effect than other solvent extracts by Agar disc diffusion method at an optimum concentration of 50 mg/ml and Broth micro-dilution method (MICs of 50-100 mg/ml and MBCs of 100-200 mg/ml). Thus, C. aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle peel extract was a distinctive candidate for the development of alternative natural agent to control the spreading of diseases in shrimp.Xylella fastidiosa is a Gram-negative and nutritionally fastidious bacterial pathogen causing Pierce's disease (PD) of grapevine and other plant diseases. X. fastidiosa strain ATCC 35879T which originated from Florida is the designated type strain for the species and for subsp. fastidiosa. In bacterial taxonomy, type strains preserve the characters of the original descriptions. Whole genome sequence of a type strain not only provides a standard reference for bacterial taxonomy, but also facilitates research in other fields such as population diversity and genome evolution. In this study, the whole genome sequence of strain ATCC 35879T was determined using PacBio RSII format. The ATCC 35879T genome has a circular chromosome of 2,565,504 bp with 2,904 predicted protein coding genes and 55 RNA genes, and a circular plasmid of 41,753 bp. The chromosomal sequence of strain ATCC 35879T was compared to that of X. fastidosa subsp. fastidiosa strain M23 from California which causes both PD and almond leaf scorch disease. selleckchem Genome rearrangements involving a ~ 1,200 K bp region were detected. Genome annotations showed clusters of phage-related genes around the rearrangement junctions, suggesting the likely involvement of phage activities.
