Numerous viruses, including bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), bovine herpes virus 1 (BoHV-1) and bovine herpes virus 4 (BoHV-4), and other pathogens are the most common causes of reproductive disorders and are responsible for huge economic losses in livestock production. This study investigates the aetiological role of BoHV-4 in fertility problems such as abortions, stillbirth and birth with unviable calves. Retrospective samples from 38 animals, including 17 aborting cows, 17 aborted foetuses, three stillborn calves and one unviable newborn calf were analysed. The BoHV-4 genome was detected in 25 (65.7%) animals by polymerase chain reaction. In 14 of these infected animals, we detected co-infection with BVDV, while the co-presence of BoHV-1 was also detected in one animal. In addition to the high prevalence of BoHV-4 genome in materials related to fertility problems, isolation of BoHV-4 from the brain of one stillborn calf indicated a causal link between BoHV-4 and fertility problems, such as abortion, stillbirths or birth with unviable calves.A feather cyst in the cervical region which, through complications of inward growth, resulted in compression of the cervical spinal cord of a Lohmann Brown layer is described. It is postulated that expansion of the cyst exerted pressure on the adjacent cervical vertebra and through bone lysis created an opening through which the cyst protruded, thereby exerting pressure on the spinal cord. The affected spinal cord segment was reduced to a fifth of its normal diameter. The bird most likely died of starvation because of limb and neck paralysis and disorientation. Although the cause of the feather cyst was not conclusively identified, moulting and trauma could have triggered its formation and subsequent growth.A kinetically controlled radical addition/elimination reaction generating fluorinated allenes was developed. MPTP This strategy offers a route to a facile synthesis of diverse trifluoromethyl, difluoromethylene, and perfluoroalkyl functionalized allenes from readily available fluoroalkyl halides and alkynyl aziridines under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory calculation of this radical clock type of reaction revealed a kinetically controlled C-N bond cleavage overcoming the alternative thermodynamically controlled C-C bond cleavage process. The study of Aspergillus micronesiensis led to the isolation of three unprecedented cytochalasans (1-3). Dimericchalasine A (1) is the first cytochalasan homodimer fused by a C-20/C-20' single bond. Amichalasines D (2) and E (3) represent a new type of cytochalasan heterotrimer with a decacyclic 5/6/11/5/5/6/5/12/6/5 ring system. Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The plausible biosynthetic pathways of 1-3 were proposed. An unprecedented cascade annulation between alkynyl 1,2-diketones and indene-1,3-diones is achieved for the first time, leading to a series of propeller-like large conjugated compounds in ≤99% yield. The products show strong crystallization-induced emission, with the colors changing from green to red. The fluorescence of the dye can be switched on and off by external acid/alkali stimuli, which can be utilized to develop a practical technology for rewritable information storage and security ink.Olefin cross metathesis has been employed for the first time for the postpolymerization chemical modification of porous polymers. High quality microspheres of poly(divinylbenzene) were synthesized by the precipitation polymerization of divinylbenzene-55 in porogenic solvents, and the olefin cross metathesis reactions of the pendent (polymer-bound) vinyl groups not consumed by polymerization were performed with diverse coupling partners in dichloromethane using the Grubbs 2 catalyst, leading to microspheres decorated with a wide range of functional groups.DNA vaccinations are promising strategies for treating diseases that require cellular immunity (i.e., cancer and protozoan infection). Here, we report on the use of a liposomal nanocarrier (lipid nanoparticles (LNPs)) composed of an SS-cleavable and pH-activated lipidlike material (ssPalm) as an in vivo DNA vaccine. After subcutaneous administration, the LNPs containing an ssPalmE, an ssPalm with vitamin E scaffolds, elicited a higher gene expression activity in comparison with the other LNPs composed of the ssPalms with different hydrophobic scaffolds. Immunization with the ssPalmE-LNPs encapsulating plasmid DNA that encodes ovalbumin (OVA, a model tumor antigen) or profilin (TgPF, a potent antigen of Toxoplasma gondii) induced substantial antitumor or antiprotozoan effects, respectively. Flow cytometry analysis of the cells that had taken up the LNPs in draining lymph nodes (dLNs) showed that the ssPalmE-LNPs were largely taken up by macrophages and a small number of dendritic cells. We found that the transient deletion of CD169+ macrophages, a subpopulation of macrophages that play a key role in cancer immunity, unexpectedly enhanced the activity of the DNA vaccine. These data suggest that the ssPalmE-LNPs are effective DNA vaccine carriers, and a strategy for avoiding their being trapped by CD169+ macrophages will be a promising approach for developing next-generation DNA vaccines. This paper presents a simplified model for the electrophoresis of a soft particle with non-wettable rigid core with charged polyelectrolyte corona under a weak-field and low charge density consideration. We have derived a closed form solution for the mobility, which reduces to the well known expressions for mobility as derived by Ohshima for limiting cases such as, hydrophilic charged core coated with uncharged polymer (Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 252 (2002), 119-125) or uncharged no-slip core coated with polyelectrolyte layer (Electrophoresis, 27 (2006), 526-533). The generalized mobility expression reduces to the existing expression for mobility of rigid hydrophobic colloid as the soft layer shrinks to zero. The general form of the mobility expression involves elliptic integrals, which can be computed easily through a software like Mathematica. We have derived analytical solutions for mobility pertaining to several particular cases. The occurrence of mobility reversal when the core and polyelectrolyte layer has charge of opposite polarity, is demonstrated in this paper.
